The Rome City School District is hiring a Nurse Practitioner for an 11-month position serving students across the district. This role includes providing direct health services, performing physical exams, developing Individualized Health Plans (IHPs), and collaborating with school personnel and families to support student health and wellness. This is a competitive civil service position; the selected candidate will be required to undergo a civil service commission review process to ensure proper licensing and certifications.The deadline to apply is July 10, 2025.SCHOOL DISTRICT COMPETITIVE CLASSIFICATIONNURSE PRACTITIONER DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This professional nursing position is responsible for overseeing all health-related activities within the Rome City School District that provides direct nurse practitioner services to students, including performing health appraisals and physical examinations for students in general or special education programs. Responsibilities include identifying individual health care needs and ensuring those needs are addressed within students’ educational programs. The incumbent must be certified to practice in the relevant specialty area(s) and adhere to written practice agreements and protocols. Work is performed independently under the appropriate license, in collaboration with a licensed physician qualified in the specialty area. The incumbent retains accountability for all professional tasks performed within the scope of practice. This position reports to the Athletic Director or another designated higher-level staff member. Additional responsibilities may include supervising professional nursing staff and delivering health-related professional learning. Performs related duties as assigned. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Note: Not all activities are performed in every position. Other related tasks may also be assigned.) Counsel and instruct school personnel, students, and families—individually or in groups—on preventive health care; Advise and counsel health office personnel, teachers, students, and families on individual health care needs, including diet, activity instructions, and required medical procedures (e.g., self-catheterization, insulin injections);Develop Individualized Health Plans (IHPs) for medical care in consultation with family physicians and other service agencies;Interpret medical findings from family physicians or service agencies for families and school personnel; Review students’ medical histories and make referrals to specialists, agencies, or family physicians as needed; Perform routine medical evaluations for new entrants and grade-level requirements, unless documentation from a family physician is provided; Perform routine medical evaluations for athletic participation, unless documentation from a family physician is provided; Perform routine medical evaluations for transportation staff; Collaborate with the district registrar during the summer to review and ensure new entrants have required health certificates; Assist in the annual review and updating of written protocols for first aid, communicable disease control, and immunization requirements; Collaborate with school health personnel and technology services to review and develop standards for recording health information in students’ cumulative health records; Maintain and coordinate student health records with school health personnel; Collaborate with school health personnel to establish policies and procedures for injuries and emergency illnesses (e.g., concussion management); Identify program needs, set goals, evaluate services, and provide recommendations to the supervisor; Coordinate the timely completion and submission of immunization records and other required documentation. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Thorough knowledge of nursing principles and techniques, including care for students with special conditions; Ability to counsel families and school personnel on medical conditions affecting student performance; Ability to recognize learning issues symptomatic of medical problems; Proficiency in assessing and integrating medical information into Individualized Health Plans (IHPs);Ability to conduct physical examinations and evaluate medical histories; Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain professional relationships in a school setting; Competence in reviewing and updating written protocols and recording accurate information;Sound judgment and the ability to make informed decisions; Strong organizational skills for maintaining accurate records and managing data; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position; Strong communications skills (verbal and written). MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:New York State certification to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in one or more of the following specialty area(s)* Community Health, Family Health, Pediatrics or School Health. National certification as a Nurse Practitioner in the designated specialty through the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) or the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Experience working as a nurse practitioner in a pediatric setting is preferred. * Part 64 of the NYS Commissioner of Education’s Regulations lists the following as specialty areas: Acute Care, Adult Health, College Health, Community Health, Family Health, Gerontology, Holistic Care, Neonatology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Oncology, Pediatrics, Palliative Care, Perinatology, Psychiatry, School Health, and Women’s Health. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Prescribing Medications (when required): Successful completion of at least three (3) semester hours in pharmacology from a nurse practitioner program registered by the New York State Education Department or an equivalent program approved by the Department. Transportation: A valid New York State driver’s license or other means of meeting the transportation needs of the position is required at the time of appointment.
