The position is created through the Project AWARE Grant program and involves the responsibility of embedding restorative practices as an integral component and overarching philosophy throughout the district so that all stakeholders (e.g. students, teachers, staff, families and the community) learn and thrive through a respectful, caring and learning focused environment. The ideal Restorative Practices Specialist will be a visionary advocate with a clear, concise understanding of restorative practices, a collaborative spirit and the independent initiative required to accomplish great things. The Specialist will be the key spokesperson who can articulate the restorative vision underlying the restorative practices continuum, and develop a common language among community members through messaging, ongoing training and modeling. They will circulate throughout district buildings to build and foster relationships with all stakeholders; elevate student, family and staff voice; through observation and coaching, support students and staff inside learning spaces (e.g. classroom, cafeteria, bus, gym, etc.); and promote, provide and review proactive/preventative and responsive restorative practices from the individual, organizational and policy levels (e.g. advise on district policies, regulations and codes of conduct through a restorative lens).The successful candidate will: support stakeholders to own the paradigm and practices over time which will result in sustainable and replicable restorative practices across the district lead efforts to identify appropriate interventions for students in need of additional assistance conduct research of current trends of best practices and collect data regarding student referrals to identify patterns and inform interventions, process conflicts between staff and students, and track other expected improvement in the following areas: academics, culture/climate and the reduction of Detention, Internal and External Suspension will attend to their own professional growth through additional restorative practice training, reflection and critical analysis of practice engage in the Restorative Process with individuals and groups of students to increase student engagement and resolve conflict will work closely with the Mental Health Trainer to enhance the Youth Resilience Toolkit (YRT) Responsibilities include (but are not limited to): Work closely with administrators, Pupil Personnel staff and teachers in the identification and development of individual, small group, and whole group interventions intended to change behaviors using evidence-based, restorative strategies including, but not limited to, restorative conferences, conflict resolution, mediation, de-escalation techniques for students and staff, and the development of restorative alternatives to Detention, Internal and External Suspension Minimum Qualifications and Education and Experience: NYS Educational Certification (Masters degree preferred) in the teaching or human services field (e.g. teaching, counseling, social work, psychology or educational psychology) Preferred, experience working in the field of school or community mental health and/or education Demonstrated knowledge and/or experience in the field of Restorative Practices Experience in K-12 school district and/or community-based human services field
