All Quogue Elementary School general education classrooms (Pre-K - Grade 6) are assigned teaching assistants. Currently, teaching assistant positions openings are available for multiple grade levels. Responsibilities for Teaching AssistantEffectively communicate and coordinate with the instructor in order to assist in daily lesson plansAid in preparing materials to be used for projects including art and scienceProvide individual assistance to children in small groups to ensure an understanding of conceptsStrictly adhere to the school's rules and policiesEnsure the safety of the students within the classroom, on field trips and throughout the campusAssist teaching in reviewing, grading and recording homework and testsMaintain, observe and assess each student's progress through assessments and be aware of students who need more one-on-one guidanceProvide additional assistance to students who have special needsQualifications for Teaching AssistantExperience working with children strongly preferredNew York State Teaching Assistant Certificate is requiredBasic understanding of childhood development and steps to support children of various agesAbility to effectively communicate with teachers and parents regarding student's progress and behaviorStrong organizational skills are essential to aid in preparing materials for several daily lesson plansPersonal accountability and patience are essential when working with children daily in a classroom environmentAbility to prioritize activities quickly and support the teacher in instances that are exceptionally busyBasic writing, math and science skills are necessary to assist in teaching students and answering their questionsAbility to manage potentially challenging behavior from students and maintain a professional and patient demeanorExperience fostering positive relationships with children and adults in a learning environment
