Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES anticipates a full-time opening for a Head Custodial Worker. Under the general supervision of the Director of Facilities, the incumbent in this class is responsible for the efficient and economical maintenance of school facilities, and has complete charge of school building cleaning, maintenance and minor repair activities. The Head Custodial Worker has charge over multiple buildings on the PNW BOCES campuses. Considerable independent judgment is involved in carrying out the responsibilities of this position. Supervision is exercised over Custodial Workers and Cleaners, including participating in the hiring process, as well as support, planning, direction and evaluation of all duties of custodial and cleaning staff. Will have working knowledge of snow removal practices and will participate in and coordinate snow removal with Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds. Supervises and inspects the work of contractors within all school buildings in conjunction with the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds. Liaison between faculty, community users, and custodial/cleaning staff. Assists Director of Facilities with budgeting, personnel, scheduling, ordering and inventory. Does related work as required. QUALIFICATIONS: Either: (a) three (3) years of experience in which the primary function of the position was building cleaning, maintenance, and minor repair activities; or (b) one (1) year of experience in building cleaning and maintenance activities and two (2) years of experience in the field of carpentry, painting, electrical work, plumbing, heating or ventilating repair work. Thorough knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies and equipment; good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heating and ventilating equipment; working knowledge of the tools, terminology, and practices of one or more skilled trades; ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, email and database software; ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential duties of the position; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to prepare reports; ability to understand and follow written directions; ability to get along well with others; honesty; good judgment; dependability; initiative; thoroughness; physical condition commensurate with the duties of the position. Must meet Westchester County Civil Service requirements CHARACTERISTICS DESIRED: Candidate should be highly motivated, enthusiastic, flexible and adaptable.
