Duties: Putnam|Northern Westchester BOCES anticipates a provisional appointment for a Regional Safety Technician within the Regional Safety Services department. Reporting to the Regional Safety Coordinator, this position conducts workshops and training programs designed to assist the component school districts in maintaining compliance with safety, health and emergency procedure laws and regulations. Some duties include, but are not limited to:Working closely with school districts current in all areas of health, safety, and security to develop and implement programs, conduct and evaluate drills focused on a multi-hazard approach to emergencies;Assists the Regional Safety Coordinator in helping participating school districts to implement changes and programs to document compliance with health and safety laws and regulations and emergency planning procedures;Conducts inspections to assess possible risks of exposure to potential threats and/or hazards in the schools;Develops, provides and/or coordinates training and programs for school personnel, parents and community groups;Assists participating school districts in researching and summarizing regulations and laws in the areas of health and safety as well as writing plans and protocols in relation.Assists participating school districts with chemical inventory, management, and disposal.Assists participating school districts with the development of a chemical hygiene plan.Incumbent of this position will be subject to a future civil service examination in the Safety Technician title.Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in environmental, physical, or biological science field OR a bachelor’s degree and one (1) year of paid experience in the field of environmental health or safety. Preferred candidates will have Code Enforcement Official and/or Building Safety Inspector certification(s) as well as previous experience facilitating group trainings and public speaking skills. Previous experience in a school health and safety setting preferred. Knowledge of statutory and regulatory requirements relating to health, safety and emergency planning in schools required. Knowledge of toxic substances and their potential adverse effects preferred.
