At Port Chester High School, we are dedicated to providing engaging educational experiences, and our science program emphasizes hands-on, inquiry-based learning to prepare students for future success, particularly in STEM fields.Position Overview:Port Chester High School seeks a passionate, knowledgeable, and inspiring educator to lead our High School Science Research Program. This role involves teaching science research methodologies and guiding students through the process of designing, conducting, analyzing, and presenting independent research projects. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in a scientific discipline, experience in research, and a dedication to mentoring high school students as they explore their scientific interests and develop advanced research skills within our student-centered learning environment.Key Responsibilities:Develop and deliver engaging curriculum on scientific methodologies, experimental design, data analysis, ethics in research, and scientific communication.Mentor and guide students (individually and in small groups) through all stages of the research process, from topic selection and literature review to experimentation and final presentation.Oversee student research projects, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and ethical guidelines.Teach students how to effectively read scientific literature, collect and analyze data, interpret results, and draw valid conclusions.Assist students in preparing research papers, posters, and oral presentations for various audiences, including science fairs and symposia (e.g., Regeneron STS, ISEF affiliates, JSHS).Manage and maintain necessary laboratory resources, equipment, and supplies for student research.Collaborate with other science faculty, school counselors, and administration to support student success.Foster connections with local universities, research institutions, or industry professionals to provide potential mentorship or resource opportunities for students.Stay current with advancements in relevant scientific fields and science education best practices.Communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, and colleagues regarding student progress and program activities.Required Qualifications:Bachelor's degree (or higher) in a relevant scientific field (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, Environmental Science, Engineering, Psychology with a research focus).Eligibility for or possession of a valid New York State Teaching Certification in a relevant science area (e.g., Biology 7-12, Chemistry 7-12, Physics 7-12, Earth Science 7-12).Demonstrated experience conducting scientific research (academic, industry, or significant post-graduate/undergraduate research experience).Strong understanding of the scientific method, experimental design, and data analysis techniques.Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.Proven ability to mentor and inspire high school students.Commitment to laboratory safety and ethical research practices.Preferred Qualifications:Master's Degree or Ph.D. in a relevant scientific field.Previous high school teaching experience, particularly in science research or advanced science courses.Experience mentoring students for participation in major science competitions (Regeneron STS, ISEF, JSHS, etc.).Experience managing a research lab or program.Record of scientific publication or presentation.Familiarity with statistical software packages commonly used in research.
