The Elementary School Counselor plays a crucial role in supporting students with disabilities within our CiTi BOCES program. This position involves providing individual and group counseling, collaborating with educators and families, and promoting the overall well-being and academic success of students.Responsibilities:1. Individual Counseling:Plan and conduct counseling sessions with individual students to address circumstances that impact their academic success and personal/social adjustment.Assist students in developing coping strategies, problem-solving skills, and self-advocacy.2. Group Counseling:Facilitate group counseling sessions to address common challenges faced by students with disabilities.Topics may include social skills, self-esteem, conflict resolution, and emotional regulation.3. Collaboration:Work closely with administration, teachers, and related service providers to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment.Collaborate with families to develop individualized plans that meet students’ unique needs.4. Behavioral Support:Provide behavioral interventions and support to students exhibiting challenging behaviors.Assist in developing behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and implementing positive behavior strategies.5. Transition Planning:Support students in transition planning, including the transition from elementary to middle school or other educational settings.Help students and families navigate the transition process effectively.6. Advocacy:Advocate for students’ rights and access to appropriate services.Participate in Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings and provide input on students’ goals and accommodations.7. Consultation:Consult with teachers and other staff members regarding students’ academic, social, and emotional needs.Offer guidance on effective classroom strategies and accommodations.8. Professional Development:Stay informed about best practices in counseling, special education, and community services. Attend relevant workshops, conferences, and training sessions.Qualifications:NYS Certification: Hold a valid New York State certification as a School Counselor, School Psychologist, or School Social Worker.
