New York School for the Deaf, also known as Fanwood, cultivates bilingualism by stimulating language skills and literacy in both ASL and English. In this language –rich environment, Deaf and Hard of Hearing children are provided the tools necessary for life-long learning and success. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:Teach ASL to K-12 studentsHelp develop or identify deaf studies curriculum for Pre-K through 12Assess ASL linguistic and communication needs of students; write ASL assessment reportsPropose strategies for improved ASL instruction and learning; work with teachers to implement strategiesDevelop and identify materials/resources to support ASL instruction and learning in the classroomWork with teachers to integrate deaf studies information in their lessonsParticipate in multidisciplinary ASL evaluations of incoming students, as neededParticipate as a member of the instructional teamServe as an educational resource person on issues related to deaf studies, ASL, and communicationWork closely with the Bilingual Coordinator and other ASL staff on relevant projects and strategiesPerform other duties as assignedQUALIFICATIONS:NY State Certification required or willingness to obtain within one year of employment - any combination of:American Sign Language (Grades 5-9), Students with Disabilities - American Sign Language (Grades 5-9), American Sign Language (Grades 7-12), Students with Disabilities - American Sign Language (Grades 7-12), American Sign Language Grades 1-6 ext., American Sign Language Grades 7-9 ext., American Sign Language- Special Class limited ext. Master's degree in Deaf Education or related field, with coursework related to ASL, Linguistics, Deaf StudiesFluency in American Sign LanguageExperience working with deaf children and/or youth
