The North Syracuse Central School District is seeking applicants to fill the position of Director of Security.MIDDLE MANAGER - DIRECTOR JOB DESCRIPTIONPOSITION Standard Work Day - 8.0 hoursDirector of Security Reports To: Deputy SuperintendentSupervises: District security staff, School Resource Officers (SROs)Status: Full-Time Civil Service PositionLocation: TBDQualifications:- Must meet all eligibility requirements for appointment as Director of Security as established by Onondaga County Civil Service.- Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public safety, emergency management, or related field preferred.- Minimum of 7–10 years of experience in law enforcement, security administration, or emergency management, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.- Experience in K–12 school security or similar large public institution preferred.Description:The Director of Security serves as the district’s leader for security programs, overseeing the development, coordination, and implementation of strategies to protect students, staff, and facilities. This position ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws while fostering a safe and supportive learning environment. The Director of Security acts as the primary liaison with law enforcement, emergency management agencies, and community partners.Key Responsibilities:Leadership & Planning- Develop, implement, and continuously improve the district’s comprehensive security and emergency response plan.- Lead the design and integration of safety procedures, crisis management, and incident response protocols.- Conduct ongoing threat and vulnerability assessments for all district facilities.- Advise the Deputy Superintendent on security-related policies and initiatives.Operations & Oversight- Supervise district security staff and coordinate with principals, the Director of Facilities, and local law enforcement.- Work closely with the director of facilities and the director of technology to manage the district’s security technology infrastructure, including surveillance systems, access control, alarms, and emergency communication tools.- Oversee security staffing levels, scheduling, and deployment at school buildings and districtwide events.- Ensure compliance with state-mandated safety drills and emergency preparedness requirements.Training & Collaboration- Provide professional development and training for staff, students, and security personnel on safety, situational awareness, de-escalation, and emergency response.- Build and maintain collaborative relationships with local police, fire, EMS, and emergency management organizations.- Co-lead districtwide safety committee and serve as a resource for school-level teams.Incident Management- Where appropriate, serve as Incident Commander during emergencies until relieved by law enforcement or emergency services.- Oversee investigations of security incidents and threats.- Ensure timely reporting, documentation, and follow-up of all security-related matters.Note: Job specifications subject to change as deemed appropriate by the Superintendent of Schools.Terms of Employment:Twelve (12) months, NS Association of Middle Managers affiliated position.
