Summer Ecosystem Restoration Project Leader New Roots Charter School Location: Ithaca, NY Program Dates: August 3–28, 2026 Training Dates: 1–2 required training days in July (dates determined collaboratively) Schedule: Work Schedule: Monday–Thursday, 8:30 AM–3:30 PM Compensation: $3,000.00 Reports To: Program Administrator Position Overview New Roots Charter School is seeking a motivated and responsible Summer Ecosystem Restoration Project Leader to lead a small cohort of middle and high school students participating in a paid, place-based environmental leadership program in Ithaca, New York. This four-week summer program engages students in hands-on ecological restoration, wetland stewardship, field science, and outdoor leadership experiences. Students will participate in habitat restoration, invasive species management, native planting, ecological monitoring, kayaking, and water-based exploration in local natural areas. The Project Leader will guide, supervise, and mentor a cohort of approximately 8-12 student participants while helping create a safe, productive, and meaningful learning environment. Primary Responsibilities Youth Leadership & Mentorship Lead and supervise a cohort of approximately 8-12 secondary students in daily field-based activities focused on environmental restoration. Foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative group culture. Support student engagement, motivation, teamwork, and problem-solving. Build strong relationships with students while maintaining clear boundaries and expectations. Help students develop confidence, leadership, and environmental stewardship. Safety & Risk Management Ensure the physical and emotional safety of all participants during fieldwork, hiking, and water-based activities. Maintain awareness of group dynamics, student wellbeing, and environmental conditions. Follow all safety protocols for outdoor work, tool use, transportation, and kayaking/water activities. Communicate clearly with program staff about any concerns, incidents, or student needs. Environmental Field Leadership Support students in hands-on ecosystem restoration activities, which may include: Wetland restoration Invasive species removal Native plant identification and planting Water quality monitoring Wildlife and habitat observation Trail stewardship and habitat improvement Model curiosity, professionalism, and a willingness to learn in the field. Help facilitate discussions connecting ecology, restoration, and community stewardship. Program Logistics Arrive prepared, on time, and ready to lead daily activities. Responsible for equipment setup, organization, transportation of materials, and daily cleanup. Participate fully in required training prior to the program. Communicate proactively with program leadership. Required Qualifications Applicants should demonstrate: An ability or interest in leading or working with youth (ages approximately 14–18) Strong communication, organization, and interpersonal skills. Comfort working outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to carry basic field equipment, and participate in physically active outdoor work. Availability for the full program dates (August 3–28) and required training days. Preferred (But Not Required) Experience in ecology, environmental education, restoration, or field science. Experience with kayaking, canoeing, or water-based outdoor programs. First Aid / CPR certification (or willingness to obtain). Familiarity with local ecosystems, plants, or wildlife.
