Job Description: Middle School Teacher 2026-27 School Year New Roots Charter School Start Date: August 2026 Reports to: Principal Brief Description: The Middle School Teacher is a full-time, 10.5-month position at New Roots Charter School. The program blends the best practices of Montessori education and education for sustainability. The Middle School Teacher will work as a team with other Middle School Teachers, a Teaching Assistant, the Principal, the Education for Sustainability Coordinator, and Student Services to educate and lead a mixed-age group of 6th, 7th and 8th graders in accordance with the mission and vision of New Roots Charter School and the principles of Montessori educational philosophy and practices. Our ideal candidate is someone who enjoys and embraces alternative learning, as well as understands the importance of nurturing and guiding children. Responsibilities: Middle School Teacher Prepare rigorous, differentiated lessons for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students in accordance with the curriculum of New Roots Charter School, its mission and vision, and Montessori philosophy and practice. Maintain a prepared environment in the classroom and other areas used for instruction. Teach Montessori Erdkinder Curriculum (professional development provided) Develop, review, and update curriculum as needed as part of the Middle School team. Facilitate the intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth of each child Maintain student record-keeping Plan and execute student field trips Build relationships and partner with families Prepare student progress/grade reports for parents in accordance with the established policies of New Roots Charter School Prepare for and participate in regular parent-teacher conferences as set forth on the school calendar Prepare student progress/grade reports for parents in accordance with school policies. Prepare an annual statement of goals, and objectives for professional development Actively participate in scheduled program level and faculty and staff meetings Attend and participate in various evening meetings and community events Establish and maintain a positive and professional relationship with students, parents, and other teachers and school personnel. Stay abreast of educational trends and developments Know and comply with the established policies and procedures of New Roots Charter School as stated in the Faculty & Staff Handbook Perform various reasonable tasks from time to time as requested by the Principal or Education for Sustainability Coordinator. Crew New Roots maintains a strong advisory program, called “crew.” Each advisory includes a mixed-age group of 6th, 7th and 8th graders. The advisory groups support students’ social-emotional development, adjustment to the adolescent experience, and school life. Advisors are considered advocates for their advisees, are the liaison between other teachers and families as needed, and are a daily part of their advisees’ life on campus Provide daily support to a designated group of 8-12 students as a crew leader Prepare for and participate in yearly scheduled parent-teacher conferences (3 per year as set forth on the school calendar), and arrange additional meetings as necessary Communicate regularly with parents Work closely with the Middle School team to organize all aspects of the students’ educational experience, running a class business, school trips, and service-learning programs Participate in all scheduled overnight trips with students and other faculty Requirements A minimum of three years of middle school teaching experience is preferred New York State teaching certification is strongly preferred (Middle School Generalist and/or subject-specific certification) Montessori Secondary I (Middle School) training, or the willingness to undertake such training Master’s degree in a relevant field is strongly preferred A strong appreciation of middle school-aged children Knowledge of educational best practices, specifically for children ages 12-14 Experience with and appreciation for collaborative planning and teaching Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with parents and staff. Creativity and adaptability in designing and implementing lesson plans. Exceptional organizational and classroom management abilities.
