Title: Library Media Specialist (.5 Position) Beginning 1/3/23Pay scale: Based on NBTA Contract Description: A fundamental responsibility of the Library Media Specialist is to provide the leadership and expertise necessary to ensure that the library media program is an integral part of the instructional program and support the goals and educational philosophy of the school. To carry out the mission of the program, the library media specialist performs the following separate but overlapping roles to link the information resources and services of the library media program to the information needs and interests of the schools' students and staff, information specialist, teacher, and instructional consultant. Library Media Specialists report directly to the building principal(s), Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Executive Director of Technology, Data and Information Services, and Director of Personnel. Expectations: Provides instruction, which is an integral part of the content and objectives of the school's curriculum Uses a variety of instructional methods with different user groups to demonstrate the effective use of newer media and technologies Use reputable tools to identify and select appropriate resources (i.e., technology, professional journals, etc.) Responsible for inventory as it adheres to the NB School Board policies Makes resources available to students and teachers through a systematically developed collection within the school and through access to resources outside the school Acts as a resource person to assist teachers in the planning and implementing various units of study Promotes literary appreciation with individuals or groups and encourage reading for knowledge and pleasure. Works collaboratively with teachers to coordinate library skills instruction for individual classes or groups Offers to teachers and other staff, learning opportunities related to new technologies, production of a variety of media, and laws and policies regarding information Offers teachers assistance in using information resources, acquiring, and assessing instructional materials, and incorporating information skills into the classroom curriculum Organizes library resources for easy access Effectively manages cataloguing procedures (i.e., classification, accession, recording, filing, etc.) Establishes and maintain effective circulation procedures Assists in the use of technology for 1:1 devices and coordinates with the Computer Science Department Participates in building, district, department, and grade-level curriculum development, professional development, district-wide committees, and projects on a regular basis Plans and prepares given Library Media Center budget in such a way that it supports and enriches the curriculum of the school Assists in identifying, locating, and interpreting information housed in and outside the Library Media Center Informs teachers, students, parents, and administrators of new curricular equipment, materials and services that meet their information needs Evaluates and selects materials and equipment within the scope of the collection providing for all curricular needs, reading levels, and interests Promotes positive public relations related to the library media center that lead to understanding and support of the program Communicates effectively with students, staff, parents, and community, while projecting a positive image that enhances the Library Media Center and the North Bellmore Mission Statement Keeps building administrators informed concerning the operation and needs of the Library Media Center Maintains contact with the public library and with other school district librarians Organizes library resources for easy access with input from the building principal(s) Actively participates in professional organizations; disseminate ideas and information to other professionals Demonstrates ability to work with others in a positive and productive way Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or his/her designee Requirements: NYS Certification — Library Media Specialist Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, parents, community members, and staff members EOE Employer: The North Bellmore School District is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate in its employment decisions and practices on the basis of legally protected classes in accordance with Federal and State law.
