Description : The Reading Teacher will support the district-wide plan to improve literacy achievement for all students through evidence-based instructional practices grounded in the Science of Reading. This role includes designing and delivering explicit, systematic, and cumulative instruction aligned to Structured Literacy approaches, with a focus on foundational skills (phonological awareness, phonics, fluency), vocabulary, and comprehension. The Reading Teacher will provide targeted, data-driven instruction for students requiring additional support, collaborate with classroom teachers to strengthen Tier I instruction, and deliver Tier II and Tier III interventions. Responsibilities include ongoing progress monitoring, data analysis, and communication with administrators, staff, and families. The position also requires active participation in professional development and contribution to building and district literacy initiatives. Expectations : · Demonstrate a strong understanding of the Science of Reading, including evidence-based practices in phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics and word recognition, fluency, vocabulary development, and language comprehension · Implement Structured Literacy practices that are explicit, systematic, sequential, cumulative, and diagnostic · Plan and deliver instruction aligned with district curriculum, NYS Learning Standards, and district literacy initiatives · Use multiple sources of data (e.g., universal screeners, diagnostic assessments, progress monitoring tools) to identify student needs, group students, and adjust instruction · Administer and analyze formal and informal assessments (including, but not limited to, running records and foundational skills assessments) to inform instruction and monitor student growth · Provide Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III literacy support through a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework in both classroom and pull-out settings · Collaborate with classroom teachers to strengthen core literacy instruction, including co-planning, modeling lessons, and supporting differentiated instruction · Provide professional learning and coaching to staff on evidence-based literacy practices aligned with the Science of Reading · Select and utilize high-quality, culturally responsive, and knowledge-building texts and instructional materials that align with students’ instructional needs · Support implementation of district literacy programs, resources, and assessments · Maintain accurate and organized records of student performance data and communicate progress with administrators, teachers, and families · Foster strong home-school connections by communicating with families and providing strategies to support literacy development at home · Utilize effective instructional practices, including clear modeling, guided practice, corrective feedback, and scaffolded support · Demonstrate a commitment to continuous professional growth and reflective practice · Perform other duties as assigned at the building and district levels Requirements : · NYS Certification in Reading or Literacy · Demonstrated knowledge of the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy practices · Orton-Gillingham and/or Wilson Certification (preferred) · Training in evidence-based literacy assessments and intervention programs (preferred) · Experience with progress monitoring and data-based decision-making · Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, families, and the school community Employment Term: This is a probationary position EOE Statement : The North Bellmore School District is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate in its employment decisions and practices on the basis of legally protected classes in accordance with Federal and State law.
