SENIOR CASHIER (CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT)DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This work involves the supervision of the receiving and accounting for money with considerable accuracy and speed. During peak periods and emergencies, actually relieving others of some of the burden of their duties. Monies are received over the counter and through the mail. Records must be kept to account for all funds under the direction of the senior cashier, who must hold him/herself responsible for shortages and collections of counterfeit monies in their own work. In addition, employees in this class are required to perform other clerical duties in connection with taxes, including reconciliation of Trial Balances of all open taxes to control Accounts. Supervision may be exercised over other clerical employees. Does related work as required.EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only)Responsible for collecting taxes and issuing receipts received in person, via mail, online and by lockbox;Responsible for contacting taxpayers regarding late and missing payments;Is responsible to post all tax payments to the software system;Prepares daily reconciliations;Processes overpayments and refunds;Works with title companies regarding the sale of properties; Works with the assessor to update addresses and assessments; Files all paperwork;Prepares reports as needed and requested;Collaborate with the City Comptroller's office regarding school tax information; Generate all tax bills;Makes bank deposits.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Candidates must have a good knowledge of procedures used in collecting taxes, involves receiving and accounting for money with considerable accuracy and speed; Must be able to issue receipts for all monies collected and keep an accurate record of all funds collected; must have a good command of the English language; ability to carry out complex oral and written directions; must be able to work with a high degree of accuracy; strong aptitude with numbers; must have good supervision skills; ability to prepare reports; ability to establish an effective working relationship with others; must have strong organizational skills; mental alertness; must have good computer skills; sound judgment; initiative; excellent customer service skills; ability to make independent decisions; honesty; tact and courtesy; dependability and physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:(A) An Associates Degree from an accredited college with a degree in Accounting, Economics, Business Administration or a closely related field; PLUS Two years of experience in work involving the handling and accounting of large sums of money and extensive contact with the public; OR(B) Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma recognized by theNew York State Education Department; PLUS Four years of the above-noted experience.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR APPOINTMENT TO THIS POSITION:Eligibility for a surety bond.Adopted csc1/25/2023
