The Mount Vernon City School District is seeking interested applicants to fill a vacancy for Director of Humanities. The Director of Humanities MUST possess the demonstrated skills necessary to provide system-wide leadership, supervision, direction, support, and coordination of all aspects of the PK-12 literacy/reading/ELA programs, curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development; Support senior leadership, principals, teachers and literacy staff in the work of implementing the K-12 New York State Curriculum and the Common Core Learning Standards; Facilitate the development of the district-wide comprehensive reading plan and ensure goals are met through the school district and direct the planning and development of curriculum, instruction, intervention programs and assessment for K-12 literacy/reading. The Director MUST have knowledge of new accountability requirements aligned to Every Student Success Act (ESSA); Be able to evaluate literacy needs within various subject areas district-wide; Support administrators, teachers and literacy staff in the learning and application of new instructional practices and the application of technology; Evaluate and recommend appropriate reading, writing and assessment programs and Assist with Diagnostic Tool for School and District Effectiveness (DTSDE) visits. The Director for Humanities will perform other duties as assigned by the Director of K-12 Education and the Associate Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction. The successful applicant MUST have NYS Administrative certification required for the position, the NYS Reading, Literacy, Social Studies or Media Specialist Teacher Certification, a minimum of five years teaching experience and be tenured as a teacher. Additionally, the applicant MUST have knowledge of K-12 literacy instruction with emphasis on early literacy, knowledge and experience with Balanced Literacy and knowledge of NYS K-12 ELA, Media and Social Studies mandates, curriculum and standards.
