GENERAL DESCRIPTION:The Reading Teacher is responsible for delivering targeted literacy instruction to students at the Elementary, Middle, or High School age level. The Reading Teacher must possess strong instructional skills in reading development, including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The Reading Teacher must be able to assess student reading levels, design and implement individualized reading plans, and monitor progress toward literacy goals. The Reading Teacher must work collaboratively with classroom teachers, support staff, parents/guardians, and school administrators to foster a literacy-rich environment and support students’ academic growth. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Plan and implement differentiated reading instruction tailored to individual student needs and reading levels for classroom instruction by teachers Push-in to classes throughout the day for reading support of students Form small groups to learners according to their levels for enrichment during the school day Utilize formal and informal assessments to determine student reading proficiency and guide instruction Develop and implement short-term objectives aligned with long-term literacy goals for each student Prepare daily lesson plans for reading instruction in a format developed in collaboration with school administration Keep accurate records of student reading progress and maintain documentation for reporting purposes Provide students and parents with evaluative feedback on reading development at least on a quarterly basis Collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate reading strategies across content areas Communicate regularly with related services staff regarding students’ literacy development and overall academic performance Maintain a structured and engaging learning environment that promotes reading success Plan for the effective integration of teacher assistants in reading instruction and literacy activities Develop reading curricula and intervention strategies in collaboration with school administrative staff Participate in student progress conferences and contribute to literacy-focused discussions Assist and supervise students during school routines including arrival and dismissal Participate in intake screenings and reading assessments for potential new enrollees Review and utilize student records to inform reading instruction Support students with reading-related accommodations and modifications as outlined in their IEPs Communicate regularly with parents and guardians to support literacy development at home Attend staff meetings and professional development sessions as required Provide instructional guidance to Teacher Assistants involved in reading support Provide non-instructional guidance to Teacher Aides as needed And all other job-related duties as assigned by the Martin de Porres School administration QUALIFICATIONSEDUCATION: NYS Permanent / Professional Certification in Reading or Literacy Education at the Elementary, Middle, or High School level NYS Provisional / Initial Certification in Reading or Literacy Education NYS Dual Certification in Reading and Curriculum Content Area Master's Degree in Reading, Literacy, or a related field EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 1 year classroom experience teaching reading or literacy skills to studentsor other related experiences dealing with children and adolescents SKILLS & ABILITIES: Demonstrated ability to understand and implement NYS Learning Standards for English Language Arts Demonstrated ability to provide effective reading instruction and intervention strategies for diverse learners Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with school administration, fellow teachers, support staff, parents/guardians, and students Demonstrated ability to assess reading levels and monitor student progress using standardized and informal tools Demonstrated ability to write targeted student progress reports focused on literacy development Demonstrated ability to analyze student reading data and adjust instruction accordingly Demonstrated ability to create a safe, structured, and literacy-rich classroom environment Demonstrated ability to implement school policies and procedures related to student welfare and academic success Demonstrated ability to support parents and guardians in promoting reading at home
