GENERAL DESCRIPTION:The School Nurse is responsible for ensuring that the routine health and safety of our students is protected and maintained while they are at school. The School Nurse will also insure that all school staff are informed and trained in appropriate ways to insure their own health and safety as they come in contact with our special needs students. The School Nurse will insure that all NY State and NYC Health requirements are met by staff and students as to medical exams, medical clearance, medication management, and medication storage and immunization documentation. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Screen and evaluate findings of deficits in our students in the areas of vision, hearing, teeth, scoliosis, growth, weight management, on at least an annual basisMaintain accurate and current information on student medical alerts and inform appropriate staff especially as new students are enrolledSupervise school procedures for students taking medication during school hoursMaintain medication supply for each student and provide for daily administration of medication especially for students on psychotropic medication requiring specialadministrationMaintain contact with prescribing doctors and with parents / guardians to insure correct prescriptions are followedReview and maintain accurate and current health records in accordance with local governmental regulationsPromote and assist in the control of communicable diseases through prevention, early detection, surveillance and reporting of contagious diseases to the appropriate local health authorityAssist in the formulation of health policies, goals and objectives for our schoolAssist in the development of the school's Exposure Control Plan to comply with OSHA Blood Borne Pathogen StandardProvide awareness training to staff and students in universal precautions to be used and implemented across our school communityInsure that protective first aid equipment is available in all classroom and work areasMaintain appropriate written data covering all medical needs and services provided to our studentsProvide a daily nursing log of students seen for any medical reasonProvide health education assistance and training in coordination with the regular counseling services of our schoolTeach parenting skills as they relate to child development and health needs of childrenProvide direct health education and counseling to assist students and families in making decisions on health and life style issues that may affect healthCounsel our adolescents concerning problems such as school-age pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, HIV, AIDS, smoking, and drug and/or alcohol abuse in order to facilitate responsible decision makingDevelop procedures and provide for crisis intervention for acute illness, injury and emotional disturbanceAssist with first aid procedures for medical emergencies at our schoolEnsure classroom teachers have access to health supplies needed for routine classroom mishapsAssist in assessing potential abuse and neglect issuesContribute to IEP development where medical issues, alerts are involvedAssist related services staff in home visits where medical issues are a major issue or concernAssist the PE department in the areas of wellness training, weight managementAssist students with personal hygiene concernsEnsure that the appropriate safeguards are provided when speaking or writing about student and/or staff medical issues, treatment, diagnosis.Assist in the intake screening process where medical concerns are raised or evidentAnd all other job related duties as assigned by the Martin de Porres School administration SUPERVISES:Nurse Aide and/or any medical intern if applicable QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:Registered Nurse (RN) BLS (AED/CPR) EXPERIENCE:Minimum of 2 years experience as a school nurse or similar experience in a medical or teaching hospital, medical center or related work area SKILLS & ABILITIES:Demonstrated ability to understand and ensure that our school complies with all designated NYS and NYC Department of Health regulationsDemonstrated ability to work with outside prescribing doctorsDemonstrated ability to work with school staffDemonstrated ability to provide technical assistance, professional development activities and training to school staff in areas of health and safetyDemonstrated ability to assist students in medical emergenciesDemonstrated ability to network with the medical system in times of crisis and emergencyDemonstrated ability to understand the effects and contraindications of the medications taken by our studentsDemonstrated ability to provide routine first aid training to adults and adolescentsDemonstrated ability to provide the level of written data and documentation needed to support the medical services available at our schoolDemonstrated ability to understand the life pressures our students face and structure supportive training for them to better meet these pressures in an informed wayDemonstrated ability to keep current on any Department of Health regulations and medical requirements==================================================================== This position description contains the major responsibilities required to perform this job.
