ENERAL DESCRIPTION: The special education teacher/math is responsible for the instructional, remedial, behavioral and adaptive needs of all our special needs students at the Elementary, Middle, or High School age level. The special education teacher must have strong behavioral management skills and instructional techniques that foster a healthy and productive academic classroom environment. The special education teacher must have a functional understanding and ability to meet all instructional, supervisory, and reporting mandates as determined by various governmental agencies. The special education teacher must work cooperatively with fellow staff, parents/guardians, outside agencies and the Committee on Special Education to better serve our students. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Plan and implement appropriate and adapted classroom instruction for assigned students in accordance with mandates as found in each student's Individualized Education Plan Prepare and implement short term objectives to meet the annual goals of each student as found on the IEP Develop and implement appropriate classroom management plan for managing student behaviors Follow school procedures for clerical tasks related to the IEP Prepare daily lesson plans for all instructional periods in a format developed in collaboration with the school administration Keep accurate records of individual student progress throughout the school year Provide students and parents with evaluative feedback on student progress at least on a quarterly basis Communicate on a regular basis with related services staff regarding each student's overall social-emotional development in school and in the community Maintain an appropriate for instructing and learning physical environment in the classroom or work area Plan for the effective integration of the teacher assistant for all classroom activities Develop curricula throughout the school year consistent with the class profile in collaboration with school administrative staff Actively participate in regular student progress conference sessions Assist and supervise students as required throughout the school day including arrival and dismissal processes Participate in the intake screening process as requested for potential new enrollees Become familiar with each student's initial case record review Assist students with medication management in accord with school policies and procedures and consultation with the school nurse Communicate on a regular basis with the parents and guardians of each student Attend necessary staff meetings before and/or after regular school hours or at other required meeting times and places Provide instructional guidance for Teacher Assistant Provide non-instructional guidance for Teacher Aid And all other job related duties as assigned by the Martin de Porres School administration QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION: NYS Permanent / Professional Certification in Special Education / Elementary, Middle, or High school level NYS Provisional / Initial Certification in Special Education / Elementary, Middle, or High school level NYS Dual Certification in Special Education and Math preferred Master's Degree in Education preferred EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 1 year classroom experience teaching special needs students or other related experiences SKILLS & ABILITIES: Demonstrated ability to understand and implement NYS Learning Standards through the instructional classroom process Demonstrated ability to provide effective classroom management skills and techniques for Elementary, Middle, or High school age level special needs student population Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with school administration, fellow teachers, related services staff, parents/guardians and students Demonstrated ability to implement the mandates of each student's IEP Demonstrated ability to write appropriate and targeted student progress reports Demonstrated ability to provide critical analysis of each student's progress or lack of progress to CSE representatives, outside agencies, prescribing doctors, parents and guardians Demonstrated ability to provide a safe and orderly classroom environment for our special needs Elementary, Middle, or High School age students Demonstrated ability to implement the school's policies and procedures regarding Child Abuse identification and reporting Demonstrated ability to assist parents and guardians in understanding the academic needs of their children and developing ways for them to influence home activities that will enhance academic growth ==================================================================== This position description contains the major responsibilities required to perform this job.
