POSITION DESCRIPTION We are seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and skilled Special Education Teacher to serve students in an 8:1 special class setting as a leave replacement. The successful candidate will provide highly individualized instruction to students with significant learning and developmental needs. This teacher will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to support students’ academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and communication needs in an inclusive and affirming school environment. RESPONSIBILITIES: • Plan, prepare, and deliver culturally responsive and relevant lesson plans using instructional materials that facilitate active learning and engagement while addressing student needs outlined in their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) • Implement specially designed instruction using evidence-based practices, including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)-informed strategies, to support academic, behavioral, and social skill development • Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, collect and analyze data, and modify instructional methods to meet individual student needs • Utilize augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems (e.g., PECS, communication devices, visual supports) to support expressive and receptive communication • Develop, monitor, and adjust behavioral supports and positive reinforcement systems aligned with student behavior intervention plans (BIPs) • Collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team, including speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, school psychologists, social workers, and related service providers • Communicate student progress, strengths, and areas for growth clearly and consistently with families and school staff • Utilize relevant technology and instructional materials to support and differentiate instruction • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with colleagues, teacher aides, and service providers • Manage and supervise the instructional and supervisory responsibilities of teaching assistants and teacher aides • Encourage and support family involvement in each student’s education through ongoing, respectful, and effective communication • Promote a classroom environment that is safe, structured, predictable, welcoming, and affirming for all students • Support students’ social-emotional learning (SEL) and functional life skills development • Communicate effectively orally and in writing, including documentation required for compliance and progress monitoring POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: • Possession of appropriate New York State Special Education Teacher Certification (Special Education K–12, Special Education Permanent, or Students with Disabilities 7–12) • Middle school teaching experience in a special class setting strongly preferred • Experience working with students with autism and significant disabilities • Knowledge of and experience with ABA principles, behavior data collection, and implementation of behavior support strategies • Experience using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems preferred • Experience with IEP development, including goal writing, progress monitoring, and identification of modifications and accommodations • Experience with New York State Alternate Assessment (NYSAA) preferred • Strong classroom management skills, including the ability to establish a highly supportive, structured, and predictable learning environment • In-depth knowledge of social-emotional learning (SEL) approaches and experience implementing SEL practices • Thorough knowledge of the New York State Learning Standards • Demonstrated knowledge of NYS Culturally Responsive–Sustaining Education Frameworks • Ability to analyze data to inform instructional decisions and improve student outcomes • Bilingual (Spanish–English) preferred REPORTS TO: Assistant Principal, Principal, Director of Special Education Ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse candidates are welcome and encouraged to apply.
