Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools, one of the leading school districts on Long Island, seeks an exceptional, experienced, visionary educational leader to serve as Director of ENL and World Languages Position Overview The Director of ENL and World Languages provides instructional leadership for the school's comprehensive K-12 English as a New Language (ENL) program and world languages curriculum (grades 6-12). This role ensures high-quality instruction and support services for multilingual learners while developing language proficiency and cross-cultural competencies in all students. The Director designs rigorous curriculum frameworks, coaches teachers, ensures compliance with state and federal regulations, and fosters inclusive practices that celebrate linguistic and cultural diversity. This position collaborates with school leaders, families, and community partners to ensure all students develop language proficiency, global awareness, and the communication skills necessary for college readiness and success in an interconnected world. This appointment is a full-time, 12-month position. Key Responsibilities ENL Program Management and Compliance (K-12) Provide leadership and oversight for the comprehensive K-12 ENL program, ensuring high-quality instruction and support services for English Language Learners and Multilingual Learners Oversee program budgeting and ensure strict compliance with state and federal regulations, including CR Part 154, Commissioner's Regulations, and federal Title III requirements Collaborate with building administrators, ENL teachers, and content area teachers to implement effective identification, screening, assessment, placement, and support services for English Language Learners Work closely with district data administrators and leadership to collect, analyze, and submit accurate state reporting data, including NYSITELL results, NYSESLAT scores, service delivery models, and program effectiveness metrics Stay informed about evolving state regulations, compliance requirements, and best practices for supporting multilingual learners Conduct ongoing research on evidence-based practices to support Students with Interrupted Formal Education (SIFE) and newcomer students, ensuring appropriate academic and social-emotional supports Monitor program effectiveness for ENL service delivery models, analyzing student progress toward English proficiency and successful transition to mainstream classrooms Develop pathways for students to achieve the NYS Seal of Biliteracy, collaborating with advisors and counselors to promote and support interested students World Languages Program Leadership (Grades 6-12) Provide direct supervision and instructional coaching to world language teachers in grades 6-12, fostering a collaborative environment focused on continuous improvement and language proficiency development Design and implement curriculum frameworks aligned with New York State World Languages Standards and ACTFL proficiency guidelines Facilitate best practices in communicative language instruction, proficiency-based assessment, and curriculum development Support teachers in implementing innovative teaching methodologies including comprehensible input strategies, authentic materials, cultural exploration activities, and technology-enhanced learning experiences Monitor student progress toward language proficiency benchmarks using formative assessments, performance-based tasks, and proficiency testing aligned to ACTFL standards Oversee world language department operations including teacher supervision, staffing needs, scheduling, budgetary planning, and resource allocation Coordinate cultural enrichment activities, exchange programs, guest speakers, and immersion experiences that deepen students' cross-cultural understanding and global awareness Teacher Development and Instructional Coaching Provide ongoing professional development, coaching, and mentorship to world languages and ENL teachers across all grade levels Conduct regular classroom observations with targeted feedback focused on instructional delivery, student engagement, differentiation strategies, and language acquisition methods Facilitate professional learning communities where teachers analyze student work, share effective practices, develop common assessments, and refine instructional approaches Model exemplary teaching practices through demonstration lessons that showcase language acquisition strategies, culturally responsive instruction, and proficiency-based learning Train teachers on effective use of authentic materials, interactive technologies, visual literacy tools, and multimedia resources to deepen student understanding and engagement Develop and coordinate professional development for all staff on culturally responsive teaching, scaffolding strategies, sheltered instruction techniques, and co-teaching models to support multilingual learners across content areas Data Analysis and Program Evaluation Establish and monitor key performance indicators for language proficiency development and English language acquisition Lead data analysis meetings to review formative and summative assessment results, including NYSESLAT results and language proficiency assessments Track student progress toward language proficiency milestones and academic language development Disaggregate achievement data by subgroup to identify and address opportunity gaps, ensuring equitable access to rigorous instruction and appropriate supports for all learners Prepare comprehensive reports on student outcomes, program effectiveness, and compliance status for school leadership, board members, state authorities, and external stakeholders Use assessment data and program evaluation findings to inform instructional planning, professional development priorities, resource allocation, and program adjustments Strategic Planning and Collaboration Serve as a key member of the instructional leadership team, contributing to strategic planning and whole-school improvement initiatives Collaborate with other instructional leaders to create integrated learning experiences that support language development across all content areas Partner with special education leadership to ensure appropriate accommodations and co-teaching structures support students with disabilities in language courses Work with guidance counselors to ensure students meet graduation requirements, including world language requirements and language proficiency benchmarks Develop and manage departmental budgets, including allocation of resources for curriculum materials, technology, professional development, assessment tools, cultural programming, and compliance requirements Ensure compliance with New York State Learning Standards, NYSED regulations for ENL services, and world languages checkpoint assessments Communicate regularly with families about curriculum goals, student progress, language development, ENL services, and ways to support learning at home Qualifications and Core Competencies Master's degree in Education, World Languages, TESOL, Bilingual Education, Applied Linguistics, or related field; advanced degree preferred Valid New York State teaching certification in World Languages, ENL/TESOL, or Bilingual Education Valid New York State School District Administrator (SDA) or School District Leader (SDL) certification, or eligibility to obtain Minimum 5-7 years of successful teaching experience in world languages and/or ENL with demonstrated impact on student achievement Minimum 3 years of instructional leadership experience (department chair, program Director, or similar role) Deep content knowledge in language acquisition theory, second language development, and culturally responsive teaching practices Strong understanding of standards-based curriculum design, proficiency-based assessment, and differentiated instruction Thorough knowledge of New York State regulations governing ENL services, including CR Part 154, NYSESLAT administration, and compliance reporting requirements Experience coaching teachers including conducting observations and providing constructive feedback Familiarity with ACTFL proficiency guidelines, comprehensible input methodologies, and proficiency-based language instruction preferred Knowledge of dual language program models, transitional bilingual education, and effective ENL service delivery structures preferred Experience supporting Students with Interrupted Formal Education (SIFE) and newcomer students preferred Demonstrated success in closing achievement gaps for multilingual learners and supporting language development across content areas Multilingual proficiency, particularly in Spanish or other languages spoken by school community members, strongly preferred Ability to analyze complex data sets, identify patterns in student performance, and translate findings into actionable strategies Skill in building relationships with diverse stakeholders and leading collaborative teams toward shared goals Excellent communication and organizational skills with commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice in education Understanding of international contexts, cross-cultural communication, and the importance of preparing students for an interconnected world **Attend Monthly Board of Education (BOE) meetings and provide support, information, and follow-up actions as needed. **Perform additional duties as assigned by the Superintendent, including responsibilities deemed necessary to meet district priorities and operational needs.
