Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools, one of the leading school districts on Long Island, seeks an exceptional, experienced, visionary educational leader to serve as Director of Humanities (ELA, Literacy, Library, and Social Studies)Position OverviewThe Director of Humanities provides instructional leadership for the school's comprehensive PreK-12 English Language Arts, literacy, and social studies programs. This role oversees curriculum development, teacher coaching, assessment systems, and program evaluation to ensure all students develop strong reading, writing, critical thinking, and civic engagement skills necessary for college readiness and informed citizenship. The Director collaborates with school leaders, families, and community partners to build coherent, culturally responsive learning experiences that prepare students to think critically, communicate effectively, and engage meaningfully with diverse texts, perspectives, and historical contexts. This appointment is a full-time, 12-month position.Key ResponsibilitiesCurriculum Development and Instructional LeadershipDesign and implement coherent PreK-12 curriculum frameworks aligned with New York State Next Generation ELA and Social Studies Learning Standards, C3 Framework, and College Board standardsLead development of instructional sequences, literacy routines, document-based question protocols, and assessment systems that build reading comprehension, analytical writing, historical thinking, and evidence-based reasoningEstablish consistent pedagogical approaches across grade levels emphasizing inquiry-based learning, close reading, text-dependent analysis, argumentative writing, and primary source interpretationResearch and evaluate curriculum materials, text sets, primary source collections, and digital resources to support rigorous, culturally relevant instruction reflecting diverse perspectivesOversee formative and summative assessments including performance tasks, DBQs, research projects, and on-demand writing that measure content mastery and analytical skillsCreate interdisciplinary learning opportunities connecting literacy skills with historical understanding, current events, and real-world problem-solvingCoordinate Advanced Placement and college-level coursework in English Language and Composition, English Literature, United States History, World History, and GovernmentLiteracy Program Leadership Provide direction and oversight for comprehensive K-12 literacy programming grounded in science of reading principles, including early literacy instruction using Heggerty phonemic awareness and UFLI foundations, intervention services, and adolescent literacy developmentImplement evidence-based early literacy practices including phonics instruction, phonemic awareness, fluency development, vocabulary acquisition, and comprehension strategiesOversee literacy screening, progress monitoring, and intervention placement using diagnostic assessments and universal screening toolsSupport teachers in implementing balanced literacy approaches, workshop models, guided reading, independent reading programs, and writing instruction across genresDevelop literacy intervention frameworks for struggling readers and writers, coordinating services with reading specialists and academic intervention providersMonitor student progress toward grade-level literacy benchmarks using formative assessments and state assessmentsIntegrate literacy instruction across all content areas, supporting teachers in disciplinary literacy practices and academic language developmentSocial Studies Program Leadership Oversee PreK-12 social studies curriculum development emphasizing historical thinking, geographic reasoning, economic literacy, and civic engagementEnsure alignment with New York State Social Studies Framework, inquiry arc methodology, and disciplinary practicesSupport teachers in developing students' ability to analyze primary and secondary sources, construct evidence-based arguments, and understand multiple perspectivesCoordinate social studies Regents examinations, document-based question preparation, and graduation analytical thinking, content knowledge, and civic literacyLead data analysis meetings reviewing formative and summative results including state assessments, Regents exams, AP scores, and universal literacy screeningsTrack student progress toward grade-level benchmarks in reading levels, writing proficiency, content mastery, and critical thinking skillsDisaggregate achievement data by subgroup to identify and address opportunity gaps, ensuring equitable access to rigorous instructionMonitor program effectiveness analyzing trends in student performance, instructional quality, and intervention outcomesPrepare comprehensive reports on student outcomes, program effectiveness, and strategic recommendations for leadership and board membersUse assessment data to inform curriculum refinement, professional development priorities, and resource allocationStrategic Leadership and CollaborationServe as key member of school leadership team contributing to strategic planning and whole-school improvement initiativesCollaborate with other instructional leaders to create integrated learning experiences leveraging skills across content areasPartner with special education leadership to ensure appropriate accommodations and co-teaching structures support students with disabilitiesWork with counselors to ensure students meet graduation requirements including ELA credits, social studies credits, and state examinationsDevelop and manage departmental budgets including resources for curriculum materials, technology, professional development, and assessmentsEnsure compliance with New York State Learning Standards, graduation requirements, and Regents examination mandatesCommunicate regularly with families about curriculum goals, student progress, and strategies to support learning at homeQualifications and Core CompetenciesMaster’s degree in education, English, Literacy Studies, History, Social Studies Education, or related field; advanced degree preferredValid New York State teaching certification in English Language Arts, Social Studies, or LiteracyValid New York State School District Administrator (SDA) or School District Leader (SDL) certificationMinimum 3-5 years of successful teaching experience in ELA and/or social studies with demonstrated impact on student achievementMinimum 3 years of instructional leadership experience (department chair, literacy coach, program Director, or similar role)Deep content knowledge in literacy development, writing instruction, historical thinking, humanities, and culturally responsive pedagogyStrong understanding of standards-based curriculum design, assessment practices, differentiated instruction, and RTI frameworksExperience coaching teachers including conducting observations and providing constructive feedbackKnowledge of inquiry-based social studies curriculum (DBQ Project, Facing History, SHEG) and balanced literacy approaches preferredDemonstrated success in closing achievement gaps and improving outcomes for diverse learner populationsAbility to analyze assessment data, identify patterns in student performance, and translate findings into actionable
