DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position involves responsibility for planning and carrying out a variety of public relations activities relative to programs and objectives for the district. Duties involve presenting the various programs offered at the district to the community. This work requires imagination and a demonstrated ability to write public relations type material and to visually present informational materials. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Superintendent of Schools. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (The following work activities are listed as examples only and in no event shall an employee be limited to only those examples listed here: Provides publicity for the district to the community at large;Serves as the media liaison;Travels to schools to cover events (includes taking photos);Uses desktop publishing to create newsletters, calendars, catalogs, brochures, flyers and other promotional literature, may be required to write copy;Provides crisis communication;Prepares public statements and correspondence for the media and general public;Coordinates media communications;Acts as the District’s spokesperson;Creates and places advertisements for customers. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of publicity principles and methods; good organizational ability; skill in the performance of public relations activities; good written communication skills; possession of good verbal and communication skills; working knowledge of educational services; demonstrated skill in the utilization of desktop publishing software and other word processing software; ability to be effective in communicating with large groups; ability to work well with students and staff; creativity; initiative and resourcefulness; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either: (A) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Media, Communications, English, Journalism, the Humanities, or a related field; or(B) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university with an Associate’s Degree in Media, Communications, English, Journalism, the Humanities, or a related field and one (1) years of experience in public, print, audio or electronic media communications; or(C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined above in A and B.
