This Civil Service position qualifies under the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide (NY HELPS) Program OR the applicant may sit for the local exam. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (The following work activities are listed as examples only and in no event shall an employee be limited to only those examples listed here.) Types letters from copy, rough draft, longhand notes, and occasionally by independent composition where policy is well defined; Types reports, bulletins, schedules, notices, meeting minutes, transcripts, etc. Sorts, indexes and files letters, reports, invoices, ledger cards, catalogues and other materials; Pulls material from files, makes simple file searches and maintains charge-out records; Types requisitions and purchase orders and checks invoices; Types and maintains time records and payroll data; Acts as receptionist by greeting and directing callers, answering questions and operating switchboard and public address system, answering questions and providing routine information, and by taking messages and making appointments; Makes arithmetic computations, compiles and types simple statistical reports; May keep track of petty cash funds or accounts and maintains records for sale of supplies; May approve and file student medical and dental excuses, issue passes, maintain detention lists and issue working papers; Operates a variety of standard office machines, including word processor, typewriter, calculator, etc. FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment; working knowledge of business arithmetic and English; ability to type at a satisfactory rate of speed; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to get along well with others; clerical aptitude; mental alertness; accuracy; tact and courtesy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of an equivalency diploma.
