We are seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and collaborative Special Education Teaching Assistant who will bring this vision to life within our specialized secondary programs. Key Responsibilities & Special Education Focus 1. Specialized Instructional Support & IEP Implementation Targeted Facilitation: Deliver adapted, highly modified academic lessons in 1:1 or small-group arrangements, reinforcing concepts introduced by the Special Education Teacher. IEP Accommodations: Consistently implement accommodations and modifications (such as visual schedules, simplified directions, and task analysis) to make the curriculum accessible. Data Collection: Systematically track student progress toward individualized academic, behavioral, and developmental IEP goals using daily charting or data-collection sheets. 2. Behavioral Support & Sensory Regulation Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs): Consistently execute individualized BIPs, using proactive strategies, positive reinforcement, and designated de-escalation techniques. Sensory & Emotional Regulation: Assist students in accessing sensory breaks, deep-pressure tools, or calm-down spaces to help them return to a state of calm and readiness to learn. Crisis Prevention: Maintain a safe, predictable classroom environment, utilizing district-approved crisis prevention and intervention protocols. 3. Daily Living & Communication Support (ADLs & AAC) Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC): Help students find their voice by modeling and supporting the use of AAC systems, including Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS), speech-generating devices. Transitions: Ensure safe, organized transitions between classroom activities, therapies (OT, PT, Speech), and school-wide settings like the cafeteria, playground, and busing. Fostering the "6Cs" in Our Specialized Classrooms Our Teaching Assistants do not just monitor behavior; they actively embed the core competencies of the Herricks Portrait of a Graduate into our students' daily lives: Collaboration & Communication: You will help non-verbal and emerging-verbal students communicate their choices, actively listen to their peers, and participate in collaborative, peer-to-peer social opportunities. Critical Thinking & Creative Innovation: You will adapt materials on the fly to support student curiosity, breaking down complex tasks so students with diverse learning styles can engage in independent problem-solving. Compassion & Confidence: You will serve as a safe harbor, validating student frustrations, encouraging resilience through challenges, and celebrating incremental "micro-victories" to build self-advocacy and confidence. Qualifications & Requirements NYS Certification: Must possess a valid New York State (NYS) Teaching Assistant Certificate (Level I, II, or III) OR an appropriate NYS Teaching Certificate. Experience: Prior experience working with children with developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, physical disabilities, or significant behavioral/emotional challenges is highly preferred. Interpersonal & Team Skills: Exceptional communication skills to collaborate closely with the classroom teacher, fellow TAs, speech therapists, OTs, and PTs. Physical Requirements: Ability to keep up with active secondary students, transition quickly, and safely lift or transfer students (with proper training) as required by the classroom assignment.
