The Harborfields Central School District is seeking a Director of Humanities (Grades K–12). The successful candidate will provide visionary leadership to advance rigorous, inclusive, and research-based instruction in English Language Arts (ELA), Social Studies, World Languages, and English as a New Language (ENL). The Director ensures a coherent curriculum, instruction, and assessment while strengthening literacy development, implementing the Science of Reading practices, promoting inquiry-based learning, fostering civic readiness, and supporting culturally responsive and sustaining education practices. This position will report to the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction. This role promotes high-quality instruction through Project-Based Learning (PBL), integration of disciplinary literacy, and effective MTSS structures. The Director ensures all students—especially ELLs, SWDs, and historically underserved groups—have access to engaging, challenging, and equitable humanities learning aligned with the NYS Portrait of a Graduate. Key Responsibilities Strengthen K–12 pathways in ELA, Social Studies, World Languages, and ENL. Expand opportunities for advanced coursework (AP and dual-enrollment), interdisciplinary projects, research experiences, debate/public speaking programs, and global studies. Support civic readiness initiatives, service learning, and inquiry-based Social Studies practices aligned to the NYS Social Studies Framework. Strengthen world language pathways, including proficiency-based instruction, Seal of Biliteracy opportunities, and culturally authentic learning experiences. Collaborate with higher education, cultural institutions, and community partners to enhance experiential learning in the humanities. Provide leadership in the integration of digital fluency across humanities content areas, supporting educators in leveraging digital tools, AI-enabled platforms, and multimedia resources to enhance literacy, research, civic discourse, language acquisition, global awareness, and authentic student engagement. Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment Support alignment and implementation of a vertically articulated K–12 humanities curriculum grounded in disciplinary literacy, inquiry, writing instruction, and secondary Science of Reading principles, including decoding, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency instruction. Support integration of PBL to promote authentic, interdisciplinary, real-world learning across the humanities. Oversee the development of common assessments, performance-based tasks, writing benchmarks, and assessment rubrics. Ensure curriculum and instruction reflect the Portrait of a Graduate, emphasizing communication, critical thinking, collaboration, cultural awareness, and civic responsibility. Lead the intentional integration of instructional technology and artificial intelligence within the K–12 humanities curriculum, supporting educators in using digital tools, AI-enabled platforms, and multimedia resources to strengthen disciplinary literacy, writing instruction, inquiry, assessment practices, and student engagement while maintaining alignment with the Science of Reading and Portrait of a Graduate principles. Instructional Leadership & Professional Development Provide job-embedded coaching and professional learning for ELA, Social Studies, World Language, and ENL teachers, including: Implementation of K-12 Science of Reading strategies to improve literacy outcomes Writing instruction and research-based reading practices Inquiry-based instruction and PBL Culturally responsive and sustaining practices Facilitate department meetings, curriculum committees, and humanities leadership teams. Guide teachers in implementing strong Tier I and Tier II instructional practices aligned with MTSS , particularly for literacy and reading interventions. Equity, Access & MTSS Use data to identify equity gaps in literacy, course enrollment, and assessment performance across student groups. Develop and support strategies to expand access to advanced coursework, accelerated humanities pathways, and world language opportunities for ELLs, SWDs, and economically disadvantaged students. Collaborate with building leaders and student support teams to integrate literacy supports, reading interventions, and language acquisition supports into the MTSS framework. Collaboration & Community Engagement Work collaboratively with school administrators, instructional coaches, and district leadership to ensure consistency and improvement across K–12 humanities programs. Establish and maintain partnerships with cultural institutions, museums, libraries, universities, and community groups to support rich humanities learning. Communicate program updates, achievements, and opportunities—including writing celebrations, civic readiness projects, world language accomplishments, and literacy outcomes—to students, staff, and families. Qualifications Required Valid teaching certification in ELA, Social Studies, World Languages, ENL, or a related humanities field. New York State Education Department administrative certification (SDL, SDA, SAS, or equivalent). Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience in a humanities discipline. Demonstrated experience in curriculum leadership, instructional coaching, or program development. Strong knowledge of literacy instruction, secondary Science of Reading, inquiry-based teaching, and culturally responsive practices. Administrative experience preferred (department chair, AP, director, supervisor, or similar). Experience leading MTSS structures, PBL integration, writing and literacy initiatives, or world language/ENL programming. Experience designing and delivering professional development for educators.
