DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:This position exists in a school district and involves responsibility for administering and participating in the operation and maintenance of computer networks. The work involves analyzing hardware and software network problems, researching new products and coordinating workshops. The incumbent may be assigned to work with Local Area Networks, District Area Networks or Wide Area Networks. Work is performed under general direction with wide leeway allowed for planning and carrying out the details of the work. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate technical staff. Does related work as required.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:Designs, installs and maintains Local Area Networks, District Area Networks and Wide Area Networks;Installs, configures and maintains network file servers;Administers micro-computer networks and is part of the communications and connectivity team;Gathers network statistics, analyzes network traffic patterns and takes corrective action to resolve network problems involving computers and data communications hardware and software;Demonstrates and trains users in the operation and maintenance of computer hardware and software and computer networks, including Internet access;Researches, tests, evaluates and recommends data communications hardware and software;Consults with vendors, distributors, and users regarding the purchase of computer hardware, software and networks;Plans, analyzes and writes proposals to help improve work flow including cost estimate for systems;Changes system software to meet program objectives;Analyzes computer processing requirements to plan a system that will provide capabilities required for projected workloads; NETWORK ANALYST (Schools)- continuedCoordinates and conducts computer workshops for users to provide for up-to-date information and support;Plans and implements recommendations for system upgrades;Plans, coordinates, and implements security measures to safeguard information in computer files against accidental or unauthorized modification, destruction or disclosure;Assigns computer access passwords to employees;Installs hardware and peripheral components, loads software packages, such as operating systems, word processing, or spreadsheet program into computer;Provides support and assistance to individuals and groups using the network.Supervises Help Desk staff by assigning technical support staff to address user data communication problems.FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:Good knowledge of micro-computer and related product technology;Good knowledge of logical operations of micro-computers and data communication devices;Good knowledge of local and wide area network technology and administration including firewall administration; route and switch configurations, and telecommunication protocols and analysis;Working knowledge of data processing methodology and techniques including documentation of data security;Ability to define and recommend micro-computer hardware and software;Ability to detect and resolve micro-computer breakdowns and problems;Ability to write proposals and cost estimates;Ability to develop and conduct workshops related to micro-computer and network operation and maintenance;Ability to configure work stations and local and wide area networks;Responsibilities: Implement, monitor and optimize new and existing Local Area Network servers. Maintain and update user Active Directory and Group Policy objects. Install, configure and maintain network domain controllers SAN and fileservers; Exchange, SQL, ISA, IIS, NAV, Back-up Exec etc. Analyze and take corrective action to resolve network problems involving computers, network hardware and network operating systems using appropriate analyzing tools. Qualifications: In-depth knowledge of; Windows Server 2000/2003, LAN networking strategies, network architecture, equipment protocols, and capacity planning. Understanding of OSI model with special focus on Layers 5, 6, and 7. Able to install, configure, and troubleshoot Windows 2000/2003, Windows XP and Citrix ICA client.Must have strong interpersonal skills; oral and written, background in training. Bachelor’s degree in technical field or equivalent experience/education required, ability to work in team environment, desire to learn and maintain broad range of hardware and software, flexibility to work alternate shifts on an as-needed basis. Certification in Microsoft products strongly preferred; must be able to meet Civil Service requirements. A driver’s license and vehicle needed for inter-school travel.Apply on OLAS
