NETWORK ANALYST (Schools) (CIVIL SERVICE COMPETITIVE)DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:This position exists in a school district and involves responsibility for administering andparticipating in the operation and maintenance of computer networks. The work involvesanalyzing hardware and software network problems, researching new products and coordinatingworkshops. The incumbent may be assigned to work with Local Area Networks, District AreaNetworks or Wide Area Networks. Work is performed under general direction with wide leewayallowed for planning and carrying out the details of the work. Supervision may be exercisedover subordinate technical staff. Does related work as required.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:Designs, installs and maintains Local Area Networks, District Area Networks and Wide AreaNetworks;Installs, configures and maintains network file servers;Administers micro-computer networks and is part of the communications and connectivity team;Gathers network statistics, analyzes network traffic patterns and takes corrective action toresolve network problems involving computers and data communications hardware and software;Demonstrates and trains users in the operation and maintenance of computer hardware andsoftware and computer networks, including Internet access;Researches, tests, evaluates and recommends data communications hardware and software;Consults with vendors, distributors, and users regarding the purchase of computer hardware,software and networks;Plans, analyzes and writes proposals to help improve work flow including cost estimate forsystems;Changes system software to meet program objectives;Analyzes computer processing requirements to plan a system that will provide capabilitiesrequired for projected workloads;NETWORK ANALYST (Schools)- continuedCoordinates and conducts computer workshops for users to provide for up-to-date informationand support;Plans and implements recommendations for system upgrades;Plans, coordinates, and implements security measures to safeguard information in computer filesagainst accidental or unauthorized modification, destruction or disclosure;Assigns computer access passwords to employees;Installs hardware and peripheral components, loads software packages, such as operatingsystems, word processing, or spreadsheet program into computer;Provides support and assistance to individuals and groups using the network.Supervises Help Desk staff by assigning technical support staff to address user datacommunication problems.FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONALCHARACTERISTICS:Good knowledge of micro-computer and related product technology;Good knowledge of logical operations of micro-computers and data communication devices;Good knowledge of local and wide area network technology and administration includingfirewall administration; route and switch configurations, and telecommunication protocols andanalysis;Working knowledge of data processing methodology and techniques including documentation ofdata security;Ability to define and recommend micro-computer hardware and software;Ability to detect and resolve micro-computer breakdowns and problems;Ability to write proposals and cost estimates;Ability to develop and conduct workshops related to micro-computer and network operation andmaintenance;Ability to configure work stations and local and wide area networks;NETWORK ANALYST (Schools) - continuedComputer literacy;Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a leadership capacity and as amember of a team.Ability to train others in micro-computer and network systems operations;Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college oruniversity with a bachelor's degree in computer science, computer technology, dataprocessing, management information systems, information resource management, orrelated field and one year of experience involving the installation of micro-computerhardware and software and configuration and administration of local and wide areanetworks; OR(B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two-year collegewith an associate degree in computer science, computer technology, data processing,management information systems, information resource management, or related field andthree years of the experience as defined in (A) above; OR(C) Completion of an industry certified network training program and three years of theexperience as defined in (A) above; OR(D) Five years of full-time experience or its part-time equivalent as defined in (A) above.Special Requirement:Possession of a valid New York State Driver’s License or otherwise demonstrate ability to meettransportation needs to perform field work responsibilities in the ordinary course of business.Washington County Competitive (revised 11/13/19)
