HFM BOCES is accepting applications for a full-time, 12-month, Automotive Mechanic Helper in Regional Transportation. HFM BOCES offers a shared service to provide student transportation for students enrolled in the Gloversville Enlarged School District and the Greater Johnstown School District.Successful candidates are eligible to take advantage of HFM BOCES health insurance coverage and the New York State retirement system once they have successfully completed the initial training period.Distinguishing Features of the Class:This is unskilled work assisting with the preventative maintenance and repair program for municipal or school owned vehicles. Duties include simple record keeping and may include the pickup and delivery of vehicles to repair facilities. The work is performed under general supervision permitting some leeway for planning the details of the work. Does related work as required.Typical Work Activities (Illustrative but not exhaustive):Checks oil level of motors, transmissions and differentials;Changes oil, oil filters and air filters;Checks air brake pressure and level of brake fluid;Changes tires and repairs flats;Maintains preventative maintenance schedule for all vehicles and arranges for timely servicing;Drive vehicles (or arranges to have to have the towed) to repair facilities and calls for them upon completion of needing servicing;Arranges for repairs in accordance with operating priorities;Orders and picks up parts from parts supply vendor;Cleans parts and equipment;Road tests vehicles following repairs to determine their road worthiness;Keeps garage and storage facilities organized and clean;Loads and unloads various departments inventories;Sandblasts, paints, and welds equipment as needed;Maintains repair records of vehicles detailing nature of repairs, costs, and vendors;May operate fuel truck;May operate a school bus on an assigned route;May assist with snow removal.The above examples of duties are intended only as illustrations of the various types od work performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.Full performance, knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal characteristics:Working knowledge of standard automotive repair methods and of the tools and terminology of the trade;Willingness to perform mechanical work;Ability to operate motor vehicles;Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions;Mechanical aptitude;Dependability;Industriousness;Good hearing and vision. Minimum Qualifications: Either:Completion of 30 credit hours in a New York State registered or regionally accredited college or university with a minimum of 6 credit hours in automotive or diesel repair technology or closely related field; orCompletion of a Career and Technical Education Program in Automotive Technology or a closely related field; orOne year of satisfactory experience in a position which shall have involved automotive maintenance and repair; orAn equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B) and (C) above.NOTE: If position required operation of a school bus, special licensing procedures apply and applicants must be certified by the school district as meeting requirements promulgated by the New York State Commissioner of Education. If the position requires operation of a Commercial Motor Vehicle, appropriate licensure is required.Fulton County Civil ServiceThis is a Non-Competitive Civil Service position. Applicants must be a resident of Hamilton, Fulton or Montgomery County in order to be considered for this position. TEACH ClearancePer Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, to be employed in a position designated by a school district or BOCES as involving direct contact with students, a clearance for employment from the State Education Department is required.
