HFM BOCES Special Education Division is accepting applications for a 10-month position, Interpreter for the Deaf. There may be additional opportunity for summer work. This position has a desired start date of September 1, 2022. Applications will be reviewed as they are received. This is a non-competitive Civil Service position represented by the School Related Professional Unit’s (SRPU) collective bargaining agreement.DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:Employees of this class translate verbal communication into manual language with the purpose of facilitating the communication process for the deaf. Incumbents are responsible for interpreting presentations, instructions, assignments, etc. in a variety of settings. Instruction and supervision are not responsibilities of this class. Direct supervision is received from administrative personnel. Performs related duties as required.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Receives verbal communication and translates for the deaf;Receives manual communication from the deaf for translation;Attends seminars, classes, exams, meetings, conferences etc. and translates to and from sign language, as appropriate.FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:Thorough knowledge of the English language;good knowledge of the communication problems confronting the deaf in main streamed environments;skill in sign language;skill in receptive, expressive and reverse interpreting;ability to facilitate the successful completion of the communication process for the deaf;ability to understand verbal communication and express this communication to the deaf using motor communication skills;ability to understand and express both verbal and manual language;ability to define abstract ideas into understandable manual language;patience;endurance;tact;judgement ;physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school, high school equivalency, or a high school Individual Education Plan Diploma and successful completion of basic courses in American Sign Language I and II: or equivalent program courses.This is a Civil Service position with a residency requirement; you must be a resident of Hamilton, Fulton or Montgomery County in order to be considered for this position.
