Social workers provide mandated counseling services by working in a small group or one-to-one with students. The social worker is the case manager for all students seen individually on their caseload. Social workers are expected to work collaboratively and cooperatively with classroom teachers, special area teachers, and parents to ensure student success. They must address students’ emotional needs and design approaches to help students chart a course for their lives and careers beyond school. The social worker’s work at the school level includes interpreting cognitive, aptitude, and achievement tests, creating, maintaining and interpreting student records, and assisting the school principal and school psychiatrist in identifying and resolving student needs, issues, and problems.All behaviors and matters related to the Hallen students’ behavior and progress are confidential and protected under the federal Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and may only be shared with the classroom teacher and appropriate therapists with administration approval. QUALIFICATIONS:The Social Worker shall:Hold a degree in Social Work.Have ability to relate to and work with children with disabilities.Have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative.Exhibit a personality that demonstrates interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents, and the community.Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.Provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status by completing Federal Form I-9 in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.Provide evidence that a criminal record history check has been conducted and fingerprint clearance has been given by the Department of Education.Provide evidence that health is adequate to fulfill the job functions and responsibilities with reasonable accommodation applicable to New York State laws.Pass the State required Tuberculin Test prior to start date.Meet such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Director may find appropriate and acceptable.VERIFICATION OF COMPETENCY:Application, resume, and updated transcript(s).Required documentation outlined in the qualifications above.Letters of reference from former employers, teachers, or other professional sources.Employment interview.JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The Social Worker shall:Establish and maintain as positive, respectful and supportive relationship with all students and staff.Work collaboratively with classroom teachers, special area teachers, and parents.Report student attendance in school data tracking system on a weekly basis.Plan a counseling program for individual students including developmental guidance, interventions, and responsive services.Collaborate with teachers to present curriculum-based guidance lessons.Confer with physicians, community health service providers, and parents about issues that affect student learning.Establish goals for a counseling program appropriate to the setting and students served.Develop plan to evaluate the counseling program and reflect on practice.Maintain an effective data-management system.Interpret cognitive, aptitude, and achievement tests.Maintain and interpret student records including but not limited to IEP’s and transcripts and write reports.Assist principal and school psychiatrist in identifying and resoling student needs, issues, and problems.Participate in appropriate in-service and workshop programs and attend required meetings.Serve as a role model for students and staff in demonstrating positive attitudes, appropriate attire and grooming, and effective work ethic.Display ethical behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies associated with the school.De-personalize students’ inappropriate behaviors especially when directed toward you.Support instruction, tutoring, and supervision of individual student or small groups of students.Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising responsibilities and duties and disclose such information within legal confines with prior approval of administration.Adhere to all applicable Federal and New York State Board of Education rules and regulations and The Hallen School policies and procedures.Perform any duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment, as assigned by their supervisor and not otherwise prohibited by law or regulation.
