Occupational Therapists provide mandated occupational therapy services by working in a small group or one-to-one with students’ fine and gross challenges. Therapists are expected to work collaboratively and cooperatively with classroom teachers, special area teachers, and parents to ensure student success. They must address students’ motor development needs and design approaches to help students communicate their needs and wants as well as their academics. Therapists are expected to engage in interventions designed to support student growth and the achievement of goals. Occupational Therapist’s work at the school level includes interpreting evaluations conducted by the CSE or parent, maintaining and interpreting student records, and assisting the school principal in resolving student needs, issues, and problems.All behaviors and matters related to the Hallen students’ behavior and progress are confidential and protected under the federal Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and may only be shared with the classroom teacher and appropriate therapists with administration approval. QUALIFICATIONS:The Occupational Therapist shall:Hold New York State Occupational Therapist Certification.Have ability to relate to and work with children with disabilities.Have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative.Exhibit a personality that demonstrates interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents, and the community.Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.Provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status by completing Federal Form I-9 in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.Provide evidence that a criminal record history check has been conducted and fingerprint clearance has been given by the Department of Education.Provide evidence that health is adequate to fulfill the job functions and responsibilities with reasonable accommodation applicable to New York State laws.Pass the State required Tuberculin Test prior to start date.Meet such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Director may find appropriate and acceptable.VERIFICATION OF COMPETENCY:Application, resume, and updated transcript(s).Required documentation outlined in the qualifications above.Letters of reference from former employers, teachers, or other professional sources.Employment interview.EMPLOYMENT TERMS:The Occupational Therapist shall be employed under the following terms:Work year of ten months (181 days) with summer per diem work as available.Salary and conditions of employment specified by Business Office.Conditions established by Federal and State laws and regulations, as well as The Hallen School policies and procedures.JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The Occupational Therapist shall:Establish and maintain as positive, respectful and supportive relationship with all students and staff.Maintain an effective data-management system.Plan and implement habilitative/rehabilitative programs of therapy following established occupational therapy protocols in accordance with the student’s IEP that will develop, improve, sustain or restore skills in academic, daily living, school and leisure activities. Conduct individual and group therapy in the areas of fine and gross motor development, visual and sensory perception, reasoning, cognitive and functional self-care.Recommend and train students and staff in the use of assistive technology or orthotic devices. Interpret evaluations conducted by CSE other provider.Maintain and interpret student records including but not limited to IEP’s.Assist principal in resolving student needs, issues, and problems.Conduct observations in the school setting and make adjustments to the instructional program as necessary.Utilize district technology and work to maintain proficiency.Maintain and ensure an accurate student therapy record system. Participate in appropriate in-service and workshop programs and attend required meetings.Serve as a role model for students and staff in demonstrating positive attitudes, appropriate attire and grooming, and effective work ethic.Display ethical behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies associated with the school.De-personalize students’ inappropriate behaviors especially when directed toward you.Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising responsibilities and duties and disclose such information within legal confines with prior approval of administration.Adhere to all applicable Federal and New York State Board of Education rules and regulations and The Hallen School policies and procedures.Perform any duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment, as assigned by their supervisor and not otherwise prohibited by law or regulation.
