Job TitleRegistered Professional Nurse Civil Service ClassificationRegistered Professional Nurse – Non-CompetitiveStandard Schedule:Monday-Friday 7:40am - 3:40pm (8 hours a day; 40 hours a week) September - June (10 month employee) with 10 additional work days in the summer Distinguishing Features of the PositionThe Registered Professional Nurse provides professional nursing services to support the health, safety, and well-being of students within a school or BOCES setting. The nurse performs skilled nursing care, assesses student health needs, maintains required health records, and ensures compliance with New York State and Department of Health regulations. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Pupil Personnel Services or designee, with latitude for independent professional judgment in nursing care and student health decision-makingTypical Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Registered Professional Nurse shall:Provide professional nursing care to students, including assessment, treatment, and monitoring of health conditionsAdminister medications and treatments as prescribed in accordance with district policy and New York State lawAssess student health needs and respond appropriately to illness, injury, or medical emergenciesIdentify physical illness or health concerns through observation, assessment, and review of student health recordsMaintain, update, and secure accurate student health records in compliance with FERPA, NYSED, and DOH requirementsLog daily student health office activity and maintain accurate documentation of nursing encounters within the designated school management systemRegularly review, verify, and maintain student immunization records; identify deficiencies and ensure compliance with state requirementsCommunicate with families regarding student health needs, immunization compliance, exclusion requirements, and school health policiesComplete required data collection and prepare, submit, and maintain mandated reports for New York State Education Department, Department of Health, and other applicable agenciesConduct routine checks of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to ensure operational readiness and document inspectionsCounsel students and families on health concerns, illness prevention, and wellness practicesCollaborate with administrators, teachers, counselors, and related service providers to support student health and educational accessMay provide guidance or oversight to health aides or other assigned staffPerform related duties as required to support school health servicesKnowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal CharacteristicsThorough knowledge of current professional nursing practices and school health regulationsSkill in applying nursing procedures and techniques appropriate to pediatric and adolescent populationsAbility to assess student health needs and respond effectively and calmlyStrong organizational and documentation skillsAbility to communicate clearly and effectively with students, families, staff, and outside agenciesAbility to maintain confidentiality and professional ethics in accordance with the ANA Code for Professional NursesPhysical condition commensurate with the demands of the positionMinimum QualificationsCompletion of a course of study approved by the New York State Education Department qualifying for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse (Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred). Minimum of three (3) months of hospital or skilled nursing facility experience preferred Special RequirementsEligibility for and possession of a New York State Registered Professional Nurse license at the time of appointmentBasic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred
