The Green Chimneys School offers an enriched academic environment with a vast array of innovative programming, including life skills, music and art, therapeutic animal-assisted activities, and outdoor education, all based in experiential learning. The fully integrated approach to education at Green Chimneys includes: Academics, Therapeutic Education, Clinical & Related Services, Animal & Nature Program and Vocational Education. Within this setting, the Literacy Specialist is responsible for providing one to one reading remediation services to students as part of tier three interventions in reading as well as provide assistance to teachers so that appropriate evidenced-based strategies are employed in order for students to achieve literacy.SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:- Assist teachers in the development of an I.E.P. (Individualized Education Program) covering a twelve month period on each student assigned to tier 2 and 3 literacy interventions. - Ensure that students on tier 2 and 3 receive remediation literacy services as per IEP. - Assist teachers in recognizing and responding to multiple needs of the diverse learners.- Assist teachers in utilizing a variety of on-going, instructionally based assessment approaches to inform and differentiate instruction.- Provide on-going professional development to staff in literacy instruction. - Provide constructive feedback to teachers in their approach and instruction in reading and writing. - Complete all necessary reports and documentation as per agency standards.- Read, understand and comply with policies, procedures and expectations outlined in the school and agency manuals- Participate in all meetings as required and school activities, as described by program calendar including but not limited to: Parent/Teacher Conferences, open house, staff meetings, CSE meetings, Red Flag Reviews, etc.- Work cooperatively with all departments in our agency and communicate student concerns with the treatment team and supervisor.- Implement a positive behavior management system for the classroom, providing crisis intervention when needed- Directs teacher assistants, 1:1 aides, student teachers, volunteers and/or learn and earn workers for the purpose of providing an effective classroom program and addressing the needs of individual students- Other duties as assignedJob Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s in Literacy or Special Education preferred. Prior field placement in special education preferred. Licensure/Certification: NYSED Certification in appropriate area. Secondary certification in the Orton-Gillingham approach or other similar phonics programs such as REWARDs and/or Wilson Reading OR in the process of obtaining such certifications.
