Director of Special Education / Dean of Students (Elementary Level)Position Overview:The Director of Special Education / Dean of Students provides district-wide leadership for special education services and student support, while also playing a key role in managing student discipline and promoting a safe, respectful school climate. This dual-role position supports both instructional and behavioral aspects of student development, with an emphasis on compliance, collaboration, and positive student outcomes.Primary Responsibilities:Special Education Leadership:Provide strategic oversight of all special education programs and services across the district.Serve as co-chairperson of the Committee on Special Education (CSE) and Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE), ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.Supervise and evaluate special education personnel, including counselors, psychologists, and nurses.Ensure development, implementation, and monitoring of Individualized EducationPrograms (IEPs).Guide program development and instructional practices for students with disabilities.Prepare and submit required district, state, and federal reports (e.g., VR, PD, SPP Indicators).Oversee budgets, grants (IDEA 611/619), STAC claims, and Medicaid reimbursements related to special education.Liaise with external agencies (e.g., HFM BOCES, county services, and preschool providers).Facilitate professional development and conduct regular department meetings. Dean of Students Responsibilities:Collaborate with the principal to support student behavior management and discipline in alignment with district policy.Assist in developing and maintaining a positive school culture focused on respect, accountability, and social-emotional growth.Monitor student conduct and address disciplinary issues in a timely, consistent, and equitable manner.Serve as a resource for staff in managing challenging behaviors and promoting positive student interactions.Communicate with families regarding student behavior and disciplinary actions, fostering partnerships with caregivers.Maintain detailed and accurate documentation of disciplinary incidents and resolutions.Qualifications:NYS Certification as a School District Leader (SDL), School Administrator/Supervisor (SAS), or equivalent.Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.Knowledge of state and federal education regulations, including IDEA, Section 504, and Commissioner's Regulations Parts 200/201.
