DISTINGUISING FEATURES OF THE POSITION: This is a supervisory position involving responsibility for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the transportation system of a school district. Because the work involves the transporting of children, the safety factor is of utmost importance. Consequently, the candidate must be aware at all times of the need to observe special cautionary measures by those involved in the transportation program and related repair and maintenance activities. This leadership position directly reports to the Assistant Superintendent for Business & Operations allowing some leeway for the exercise of independent judgement. Supervision is exercised over the work of all transportation personnel. The position also includes potential related work as assigned.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:Daily driving responsibilitiesPrepares time schedules for buses.Determines routes to be followed by bus drivers.Supervises loading and determines stopping places for buses.Prepares all state transportation reports and maps of bus routes.Keeps a daily record of mileage, number of pupils carried, and number of stops made on each route.Provides the Superintendent with a monthly transportation report including operation costs, (gasoline, oil, Anti-freeze, parts, materials, labor, wages, storage and other expenses).Approves all transportation purchase and bills.Supports behavior rules to be maintained and student seating arrangements on buses.Supervises the repair work on buses and approves work orders outside garages.Arranges for all special bus trips.Maintains and approves time records of bus drivers for payroll purposes.Authorizes overtime on a rotating basis for all bus drivers. FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:Good knowledge of standard transportation methods of the operation of buses: Good knowledge of New York State Motor Vehicle Law; Good knowledge of safe driving practices: Good knowledge of general repairs for school transportation equipment: Good knowledge of the geography of the district: Ability to schedule and supervise the work of others in the department: Ability to keep meticulous records and reports: Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Three-Five (3-5) years of work experience vehicle dispatching, and/or driving vehicles, route scheduling or fleet maintenance for a private or public enterprise such as a trucking company, municipal transportation system, school bus system or similar activity. Candidate must currently hold a valid 19A certification. Clean CDL License. Fingerprint clearance. Candidate must enjoy working as part of a team, serving others in a leadership position, and understand the important role bus drivers play in the lives of school children.Ideal candidate will have 3+ years demonstrated success leading a team as a head school bus driver or similar position. Fire Island School District is comprised of a single school building educating Gr. PK-6th grade students.
