Location: East Ramapo Central School District, Spring Valley, NYReports To: Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & InstructionSalary: Commensurate with experience and district guidelinesPosition SummaryThe Director of Literacy & Reading Instruction – Elementary Grades is responsible for leading the district’s vision, programming, and instructional strategy for literacy development in grades K–6. This role provides leadership in the design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of reading and writing instruction across all elementary schools. The Director ensures alignment with New York State Learning Standards, evidence-based literacy practices, and district equity priorities, with a strong emphasis on improving outcomes for diverse learners, including English Language Learners and students with disabilities.Key ResponsibilitiesLead the development and implementation of a comprehensive district-wide elementary literacy framework aligned to NYS Next Generation ELA Standards and the Science of Reading.Support schools in strengthening Core instruction, Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 literacy instruction within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports-Integrated (MTSS-I) framework.Provide guidance on evidence-based practices in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing instruction.Model effective literacy instructional strategies and provide feedback to teachers and administrators through classroom observations and coaching cycles.Review and update district pacing guides, scope and sequence documents, and curriculum maps for grades K–6.Coordinate the integration of literacy across content areas, including science and social studies.Support schools in the effective use of literacy assessment tools such as ENIL/IRLA, STAR, Wilson Fundations, NWEA, and other local benchmarks.Monitor fidelity of assessment administration and interpretation of results.Assist principals in developing school-level literacy action plans based on data trends and student needs.Design and deliver ongoing professional learning for teachers, administrators, and instructional coaches.Support the coaching model by collaborating with the Director of ELA - Secondary, building-based literacy coaches, and teacher leaders. In effect, literacy and reading shall be supported across all grades K - 12. QualificationsRequired:NYS Certification in Literacy and School District Leader (SDL).Administrative experience supporting literacy initiatives (5 years or more preferred).Experience working with diverse student populations, particularly with English Language Learners.Experience utilizing data to improve student and staff outcomes - and utilizing professional development strategies for school improvement. Demonstrated success in improving literacy outcomes in elementary schools.Preferred:Bilingual (Spanish)Experience in a high-needs, multilingual, or urban district.Working ConditionsFull-time, 12-month administrative position.CompensationCompetitive for the region
