FLES Spanish Teacher - Edgemont Union Free School District Edgemont UFSD seeks a dynamic, student-centered FLES (Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools) Spanish Teacher to advance the elementary world language program. The selected candidate will design and deliver engaging, proficiency-based instruction aligned with New York State (NYS) and American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) standards, fostering students’ appreciation for language, culture, and global citizenship. Qualifications Demonstrated expertise in language acquisition for young learners, including proficiency-oriented instruction and comprehensible input strategies. Ability to design and implement interactive lessons utilizing songs, storytelling, movement, and visuals tailored to elementary learners. Experience in developing and delivering standards-based curricula aligned with district goals and learning progressions. Demonstrated ability to differentiate instruction to address the needs of diverse learners, including English Language Learners (ELLs) and students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Ability to establish a positive, inclusive classroom environment that promotes communication in the target language. Experience utilizing formative and summative assessment practices to monitor student progress. Certification Valid New York State certification in Spanish (Languages Other Than English [LOTE] 7–12 or equivalent). FLES Extension (Grades 1–6) required, in progress, or with anticipated enrollment in the program. Additional Qualifications Experience with elementary world language programs, such as FLES or immersion, is preferred. Knowledge of ACTFL World-Readiness Standards and proficiency-based instructional methods. Experience integrating technology and digital tools to enhance language acquisition. Demonstrated commitment to culturally responsive teaching and inclusive educational practices. Ability to contribute to curriculum development, vertical alignment, and program evaluation initiatives. Willingness to engage in ongoing professional learning, including innovative practices such as artificial intelligence (AI) integration and interdisciplinary design.
