Our ?school debate program ?is committed to excellence?, consistently producing nationally ranked debaters, and is one of the most competitive high school programs in ??Westchester.Position OverviewWe are seeking a dynamic and experienced Head School Debate Coach to lead our competitive debate team, encompassing all formats - Lincoln-Douglas, Public Forum, Policy, and Parliamentary. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work with a dedicated and talented group of students spanning grades 7 through 12. The ideal candidate will have a passion for mentoring students, a deep understanding of debate formats and techniques, and adept management skills to coordinate debate tournament schedules and logisticsStart Date: August 1, 2024 Job Responsibilities (required)Team Leadership: Lead and oversee all aspects of the school debate program for grades 7-12, and strive for program excellence both at the state and national levels. Establish a strong and positive team culture that values leadership, responsibility, mentorship, and respect.Individualized Support: Provide personalized guidance to each student, supporting their unique goals and aspirationsNovice Program Management: ?Establish and maintain a strong novice program to develop foundational? debate and public speaking skill?s that can fuel the next batch of varsity debatersTraining and Preparation: Conduct after-school 1-2 weekly in-person practices tailored to each debate format, thoroughly preparing students for upcoming competitions. Arrange scrimmages with regional schools to enhance skills and readiness. Flexible timings can be accommodated.In-Tournament Support: Attend weekend tournaments to provide real-time coaching and feedback and represent Edgemont as a judge as necessaryPersonnel Management: Recruit qualified personnel for judging duties, and format-specific coaching, handle tax forms, and coordinate logistics and compensation for hired personnel.Communication: Act as the primary point of contact for tournament officials, maintaining professional communication before, during, and after competitions. Regularly update school administration and parents regarding team activities and upcoming events.Community Engagement: Foster positive relationships with administrators, parents/guardians, and students, promoting a supportive and collaborative environment within the debate team. Engage the parent volunteers to provide additional support(as needed) for the program's success.Additional Responsibilities Tournament Planning & Budget Management: Develop a comprehensive competition calendar across all debate formats for the academic year and manage the team budget, including timely submission of reimbursement and payment formsTournament Logistics & Coordination: Manage all aspects of tournament participation, including student sign-ups, registration, form submissions, and fee payments. Organize logistics for travel tournaments, including transportation, meals, and lodging arrangements for the team.QualificationsEducation/Certification: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited universityExtensive experience and proven coaching success in high school debate or forensics with students participating at the state and national level (e.g., NSDA, NIETOC, TOC)Expert knowledge and competitive debate strategy to coach Lincoln-Douglas, Parliamentary, Policy, and Public Forum Debate formatsFamiliarity with local and regional norms, as well as the national circuits. Competition experience in high school and/or college debate is preferred.Exceptional oral/written communication and management skillsAvailability to work evenings and weekends, including overnights and travel to tournamentsPatient, enthusiastic, and adaptable approach to working with students of varying abilities.Ability to develop relationships and maintain consistent contact with students, parents, and colleaguesAn established reputation within the debate community, including national organizations.Stipended Salary: $47,220Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
