Guidance Counselor (6-8), ProbationaryMiddle School2025-2026Position PurposeUnder the general supervision of the Principal, the School Counselor will serve as a key member of the school community, supporting the academic, social-emotional, and behavioral development of all students, with an emphasis on students with disabilities. The counselor delivers the school’s guidance curriculum to grades 6-8, fosters a positive and inclusive school culture through school-wide initiatives, collaborates closely with teachers and administrators, and provides individualized support to help students thrive both in and out of the classroom.Essential Performance ResponsibilitiesSupports students in understanding their strengths, challenges, interests, and goals through the interpretation of standardized assessments and relevant data.Guides students in developing individualized academic and post-secondary plans that reflect their personal goals, interests, and abilities.Collaborates with students and families during course selection to ensure choices align with both educational requirements and future aspirations.Provides direct support to students in exploring career interests, college opportunities, scholarships, and employment pathways.Assists in the coordination of student schedules in partnership with school administration and counseling staff.Delivers classroom-based lessons as part of the school-wide guidance curriculum to support students' academic, career, and social-emotional development.Coordinates and participates in school-wide initiatives that promote positive school culture, student well-being, and inclusion.Works collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and special education staff to understand and meet the needs of all learners, particularly students with disabilities.Offers individual and small-group counseling that promotes self-awareness, resilience, responsible decision-making, and emotional growth.Actively participates in ongoing professional development to stay current with best practices in school counseling, special education, and student support services.Maintains accurate and confidential student records in accordance with district policies and legal requirements; prepares reports and transcripts as needed for college and employment applications.Communicates regularly and effectively with parents and guardians to support student success and foster home-school collaboration.Additional DutiesPerforms other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.Note: The above description is illustrative of tasks and responsibilities. It is not meant to be all inclusive of every task or responsibility.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of pre- and post-high school program eligibility requirements, including transition planning for students with disabilities.Understanding of the CSE process, including participation in meetings, development of IEP goals, and collaboration with special education staff and families to support student success.Knowledge of differentiated instruction and support strategies tailored to diverse learning styles and individual student needs.Proficiency in analyzing student data and utilizing data systems to inform counseling practices, interventions, and the creation of action plans.Familiarity with applicable federal and state education laws, including those governing special education and school counseling services.Ability to effectively use computer systems and software applications to manage student records, communication, and documentation.Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities and priorities effectively.Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage meaningfully with students, families, and staff.Capacity for self-reflection and commitment to ongoing professional growth and development.Qualifications ProfileCertification/License: NYS State School Counseling CertificationEducationBachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.Masters Degree preferred.ExperienceSuccessful prior experience for the appropriate grade levels preferred.Employment Terms:10 month, full time probationary positionSalary range in accordance with the Eastchester Teachers Association (ETA) negotiated salary schedule; $62,620 - $86,668, step placement contingent upon prior related experience.
