Anticipated Vacancy:Interpreter for the Hearing Impaired- Provisional- DCB 2019- 23/24(1.0 FTE) LOCATION(S): Various TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:The following is indicative of the level and types of activities performed by incumbents in this title. It is not meant to be all inclusive and does preclude a supervisor from assigning activities not listed which could be reasonably expected to be performed by an employee in this title.1. Responsible for the translation of verbal communications for deaf and/or hearing impaired students;2. Ensures appropriate assistance is provided to student by translating academic instructional materials to deaf students in classroom;3. Interprets presentations, instruction and other assignments in a variety of settings for students;4. Assists students in vocational evaluation process by interpreting standardized tests for deaf students;5. Provides necessary information to appropriate staff (teachers, counselors, administration) regarding the assigned students;6. Accompanies students throughout the school day to ensure appropriate supervision and safety;7. Attends meetings as required. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Knowledge of standard methods of manual communication for the deaf and hearing impaired in order tobe able to directly assist students of various ages in the learning process;Knowledge of the care of children to foster a positive learning environment;Ability to communicate in American Sign Language;Ability to express subject matter clearly in sign language, both orally and in writing;Ability to prepare and present required subject matter to students;Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students of various ages and abilities;Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships students, families and schoolpersonnel;Personal characteristics necessary to perform the duties of the position;Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma PLUS:EITHER: (A) Completion of a training program for Interpreters recognized and accredited by the National Institute for the Deaf; OR: (B) Transliterating Certification, Interpreting Certification, or comprehensive Skills Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf;OR: (C) One (1) year of full-time work experience which primarily involved interpreting for the hearing impaired;OR: (D) An equivalent combination of the training and experience as indicated in (A) and (B) and (C) above. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Candidates must possess a valid New York State Driver License at time of appointment and to maintain position. Ability to communicate in American Sign Language or other variety of sign language GRADE LEVEL: Various START DATE: September 1, 2023 This is a competitive Civil Service position and requires the applicant to be reachable on the future Dutchess County Human Resources Certification Eligible List
