The Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School has an anticipated opening for a probationary Bilingual School Counselor. The goal of the School Counselor is to create and enhance a positive, supportive, and inclusive learning environment for all children. The counselor’s role includes evaluating student needs, offering counseling and support, collaborating with staff and families, and contributing to various school programs to ensure students' emotional, social, and academic well-being. This position will also support bilingual students, requiring effective communication and understanding of both educational and emotional challenges in a bilingual context.Certification Requirements:School Counselor Certification (New York State)Bilingual certification preferredReports to:Building PrincipalAssistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel ServicesSpecific Duties and Responsibilities:Counseling:Provide individual and group counseling for students facing social and emotional challenges.Facilitate counseling groups aimed at helping students understand themselves, their relationships, and how to cope with emotional difficulties.Consultation:Regularly consult with teachers, staff, and parents to discuss student progress and challenges, offering insights and strategies for classroom modifications and support.Guide classroom teachers in fostering a caring, supportive class environment and develop lessons to encourage peer cooperation.Assist parents with concerns related to academics, behavior, discipline, family crisis, etc.Program Delivery and Research:Stay current with research on child development, neuropsychology, testing, and related fields.Deliver programs, including child abuse and abduction prevention, to educate students on critical social issues.Curriculum and Community Engagement:Develop and implement curriculum related to mental health and socio-emotional learning.Participate in faculty and community programs to promote student success.Collaborate with school administration and staff to ensure inclusive and effective practices.Other Duties as Assigned:Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal and/or the Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel ServicesQualifications:New York State Certified School Counselor (Master’s or Ph.D. degree).Experience in child psychology Strong background in creating and implementing evidence-based interventions.Proficiency in both English and a second language (Spanish preferred).Excellent written and oral communication skills.Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of students, staff, and families.Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and understanding of bilingual student needs.
