The Department Chairperson is a teacher-leader who serves as the primary instructional catalyst for their department. Operating as a bridge between faculty and administration, the Chairperson facilitates a culture of continuous improvement, ensures curricular alignment, and mentors colleagues to optimize student learning outcomes. Responsibilities: 1. Instructional Leadership Classroom Coaching: Conducts regular non-evaluative (non-APPR) observations to provide actionable feedback on teaching techniques and instructional methods. Data-Informed Instruction: Leads the department in reviewing student assessments and grading patterns to ensure consistency, rigor, and responsiveness to student data. Curriculum Innovation: Modernizes course guides and instructional programs based on current research, NYS standards, and objective student data. Professional Learning: Identifies staff needs and designs or recommends targeted in-service training and professional development opportunities. Mentorship: Oversees the orientation of new teachers and provides direct support to student teachers and substitute personnel. Interdisciplinary Integration: Collaborates with other Department Chairs, Counselors, Building Administrators, and the Curriculum and Instruction team (Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction and Directors) to ensure instructional and curriculum alignment and integrated learning experiences. 2. Administrative & Operational Management Strategic Planning: Facilitates departmental meetings to align goals with building-level and district-wide instructional priorities. Resource Stewardship: Assists with managing the departmental budget, makes recommendations for the acquisition of current instructional materials (e.g., textbooks, digital tools), and maintains an appropriate inventory. Personnel Collaboration: Participates in the hiring process for new staff. Resolution Support: Serves as the first point of contact for resolving departmental inquiries involving staff, students, or curriculum implementation. Qualifications: Classification: Teacher (10-month) with an extra stipend and designated release time per the Clarkstown Teachers Association (CTA) contract. Required Certification: Valid New York State Teaching Certificate in the Content Area and NYS School Building Leader (SBL) Certification. Experience: Extensive secondary teaching experience with evidence of leadership (e.g., leading professional learning, developing department curriculum, mentoring). Skills and Competencies: Communication: Exceptional ability to translate district goals into departmental action and communicate effectively with the professional staff and the Curriculum and Instruction Team (Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction and Directors) Collaborative Spirit: Proven ability to build consensus and work cooperatively within a diverse school community. Organizational Mastery: Strong ability to organize tasks effectively while maintaining high standards for departmental output and alignment with District goals.
