The priority in Chappaqua is clear: to be a learning organization where talented individuals from diverse backgrounds feel seen and valued, and are committed to doing their best work!Chappaqua CSD is looking for a dynamic, engaging and thoughtful educator to serve in the position of English / Theater Teacher (Grades 9-12)Essential Functions for English CoursesCandidate would teach a blend of English and Drama/Communications courses.Familiar with NYS ELA Standards and uses them for unit and lesson plan development.Strong, broad knowledge of fiction and non-fiction literature, both classic and contemporary, with a particular focus on American texts.Thoughtfully centers equity in the daily learning experiences to support the students' awareness of identity, inclusivity and social justice. Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.Creates time and space for students to actively engage in independent reading and writing.Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth; actively seeks professional learning opportunities.Encourages family involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and families.Essential Functions for Theater CoursesDevelops and administers school theater/drama experience that is consistent with school district goals and vision.The responsibilities of a theater/drama teacher may include creating lesson plans, teaching students about plays and the history of drama, assisting students in creating their own dramatic pieces, organizing and managing the learning environment, and directing performance rehearsals. Candidate should have extensive experience directing high school plays and musicals and hands-on knowledge of set design, lighting and theater technology.Ability to teach courses in speech communications, musical theater and theater history.Responsible for introducing students to acting methods and to all of the other elements associated with launching theatrical productions (from costume and set design to lighting and direction). Students are taught how to read plays with the proper feeling and expression, as well as understand the overall genre of theater. Role-playing and improvisation may also become part of a student’s curriculum.Conducts ongoing assessment of student skills and learning in artistic techniques and expression, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.Certification/License:New York State Certification at the Secondary Level (theater certification is preferable but would consider applicants with other secondary certifications including art or music). New York State English Certification Gr. 7 - 12 required.
