Start date September 1, 2025.SCHOHARIE COUNTY CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATION Class Title: OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST ____________________________________________________________________________________ DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: An Occupational Therapist develops, administers and/or supervises professional occupational therapy programs and services. The work is performed under general supervision. Incumbents have a leeway for exercise of professional judgment. Incumbents may supervise professional and/or clerical staff. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative Only) Administers and supervises occupational therapy programs; Assesses and evaluates pupil needs and plans treatment programs; Selects activities and exercises designed to improve patients' motor, mental and vocational abilities and aptitudes; Writes or helps write parts of Individualized Education Programs; Instructs and trains patients and family members in therapeutic techniques and activities which lead to improved functioning; Modifies or changes treatment methods according to changes in patient’s physical and functional status after periodic evaluations; Consults with medical, psychological, educational and other professionals and advisory committees involved in the treatment of patients and participates in multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary staffing of patients to update treatment plans; Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports in accordance with the generally accepted standards of the profession and requirements of the employer; Interprets recommendations for occupational therapy referrals and gathers data pertinent to each patient; May make budget and purchase recommendations, prepare requisitions and make purchases in accordance with the employer's fiscal policies and procedures; May perform all the duties and activities of an Occupational Therapist Assistant. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of the principals and practices of occupational therapy and related equipment and procedures; and of the use and maintenance of, and safety procedures required by, the equipment and devices used in occupational therapy. Excellent skill in providing occupational therapy treatments and programs. Ability to plan, direct, administer and manage occupational therapy programs; communicate effectively, motivate patients and prepare and maintain written records and reports; and to supervise subordinates. Sound judgment. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (A) New York State license to practice occupational therapy and EITHER: (A) Bachelor's degree in occupational therapy from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university AND one (1) year of experience as an Occupational Therapist or Occupational Therapy Assistant in a school, hospital, clinic or medical facility OR (B) Associate degree in occupational or physical therapy from a New York State or regionally accredited college AND three (3) years of experience as described in (A), OR (C) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above. NOTE: Part-time employment can be pro-rated to count towards full-time (based on number of hours worked per week) and a higher level of education can be pro-rated for experience up to a year
