POSITION CLASS TITLE: TRANSPORTATION SUPERVISORJURISDICTIONAL CLASS: CompetitiveCIVIL DIVISION: School DistrictsAUTHORIZATION: Personnel OfficerPOSITION CLASS DEFINITION:Essential nature of work, degree of difficulty and responsibility.Has responsible charge of the transportation system of a large school district; does related work as required.This is a supervisory position involving responsibility for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the transportation facilities involving a fleet of buses of a large school district. The safety factor is of utmost importance because children are involved. Consequently, the incumbent at all times is aware of the need to observe special cautionary measures in overseeing the transportation program and related repair and maintenance activities. The work is performed under general supervision allowing considerable leeway for the exercise of independent judgment. Immediate supervision is exercised over the work of bus drivers, automotive mechanics, and other transportation personnel.PRIMARY WORK ACTIVITIES:Typical activities characteristic of the class.-- Establishes routes to be followed by various drivers;-- Prepares time schedules for buses;-- May supervise service, maintenance and repair of all school district vehicles;-- May write specifications for all new vehicles and equipment;-- Gives road tests to and trains new drivers;-- May conduct road trips to observe and evaluate driver’s defensive driving performance in accordance with Vehicle and Traffic Law regulations;-- Arranges or conducts periodic training and safety classes for bus drivers;-- Keeps administrators and drivers notified of changes in motor vehicle laws and regulations;-- Assigns drivers for all extracurricular trips;-- Supervises loading and recommends stopping places for buses;-- Assists in the preparation of State Transportation reports and maps of bus routes;-- Keeps a daily record of mileage and number of pupils carried;-- Investigates bus accidents on the scene and prepares reports;-- Handles complaints from drivers, parents, students and others in relation to bus routes, student discipline and other related matters;-- Makes out periodic reports which include cost of operating each bus on the basis of expenses for gasoline, oil, grease, anti-freeze, parts, labor wages, storage or rental, and other expenses;-- Approves all purchases of parts and materials;-- Arranges for all special trips including those for athletic teams;-- Approves and maintains time records of bus drivers, aides, and bus maintenance for payroll purposes;-- Prepares a variety of reports.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Summary of full performance level characteristics.THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF: standard transportation methods and the operation of buses; automotive repair methods and the terminology and tools of the trade; the geography of the district; safety procedures and practices in the operation of the automotive equipment; the New York State Motor Vehicle Law;ABILITY TO: plan and supervise the work of subordinates; keep records and make reports; get along well with others; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education, specialized background, training and experience.A. Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with an associate’s degree and three (3) years of experience in school transportation, commercial bus or truck transportation, or the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles which included responsibility for operating, routing, scheduling personnel, or the maintenance of vehicles, six (6) months of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; ORB. Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and five (5) years of experience as defined in “A” above, six (6) months of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; ORC. An equivalent combination of experience as defined within the limits of “A” and “B” above.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:If the position involves the operation of a school bus, candidates must possess the appropriate level New York State Driver’s License at time of appointment and satisfy the requirements for School Bus Driver set forth in the Rules and Regulations of the New York State Commissioner of Education.If the position involves examination of School Bus Drivers in accordance with Section 6.16 of Regulations of the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles and Article 19A of the Vehicle and Traffic Law, candidates must possess certification as an Examiner issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles at time of appointment.REQUIRED CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:Established by statute, rule or regulation governing position.Rolling Applications will be reviewed starting August 8th until the position is filled.
