DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a confidential administrative position with responsibility for the development and implementation of a public relations program for the Office of the Superintendent of Schools and Board of Trustees. Under the direction of the Superintendent the incumbent has extensive contact with media representatives, special interest groups and administrative personnel in order to publicize and clarify the Superintendent's position on pending issues, and deals with sensitive and confidential issues in the schools and community. Direct supervision is received from the Superintendent of School. General supervision is exercised over assigned personnel. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Deals with sensitive confidential issues in the community on behalf of the Superintendent and Board of Trustees; Plans, directs and prepares the District's public relations programs; Acts as the Superintendent's liaison with the press; Establishes and maintains the School District's relations with press correspondents, television, radio, newspaper editors and publishers; Writes speeches for the Superintendent and Board of Trustees; Prepares and edits districtwide news releases, features, public service announcements and related material; Writes and submits districtwide press releases; Pitches stories and various forms of media coverage to newspapers, television, cablevision, national magazines and radio; Manages and updates monthly the School District's website on the Internet; Researches educational issues; Monitors and keeps current on educational legislation; Works with the Publications/Graphics Department on dissemination of information. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of public relations; Thorough knowledge of applicable laws and regulations pertaining to public information and media issues; Thorough knowledge of the techniques of preparing, producing and disseminating public information; Ability to write an effective press release; Good knowledge of the functions and organization of the Yonkers Public Schools; Ability to operate a computer; Ability to write an effective press release; Ability to speak effectively in public; Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and the media; Initiative; resourcefulness; tact; courtesy; integrity; good judgement; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
