Western Suffolk BOCES anticipate openings for three Provisional Occupational Therapists.**This position falls within the jurisdiction of the Suffolk County Department of Civil Service. When the Suffolk County Civil service examination is held for this title, the provisional employee must take the examination, pass it and be reachable for appointment from the resultant eligible list in order to be retained.***DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASSUnder general supervision, an employee in this class plans and carries out a program of therapeutic activities, prescribed by a physician, to facilitate the rehabilitation and employment of physically disabled patients. Work follows recognized practices in the occupational therapy field, and requires imagination and skill in applying these practices to individual cases. Work is reviewed by a physician or technical supervisor through periodic reports, conferences and observations of techniques employed and results obtained. Does related work as required.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIESInstructs physically handicapped patients in arts, crafts and occupational skills which are geared to a program of rehabilitation;Evaluates patients' previous employment, training, aptitudes and handicaps and then recommends and sets up an occupational therapy program in accordance with a physician's recommendations;Participates in periodic staff conferences with physicians, nurses, supervising therapists and other medical personnel to discuss and plan therapy that will be of the greatest physical and psychological benefit to the patient;Conducts an in-service training program for occupational therapy students and other personnel affiliated with the program;Maintains complete records of each patient's work and progress, and makes oral and written reports to the physician in charge.FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICSGood knowledge of the principles, practices, materials, and equipment used in occupational therapy; good knowledge of the possible hazards to patients during therapy, and of necessary precautionary and remedial measures; good knowledge of the proper care and maintenance of apparatus and equipment used; ability to evaluate a patient's physical condition and job aptitudes and to determine the length and type of treatment; ability to supervise and provide individual or group instruction to patients in an occupational therapy program; ability to understand and adapt a physician's directions in accordance with recognized practices; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSOPEN COMPETITIVEPossession of a registered Occupational Therapist license issued by the New York State Department of Education; and maintenance of such license during the term of employment in this position.NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTAt the time of appointment and during employment in this title, candidates must be registered to practice occupational therapy in the State of New York.Depending on assignment, candidates may be required, at the time of appointment and during employment in this title, to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.Please upload your résumé and a job specific cover letter to apply.
