Western Suffolk BOCES anticipates an opening for a Provisional School Lunch Manager.Salary: $115,000Start Date: June 2024** This position falls within the jurisdiction of the Suffolk County Department of Civil Service. When the Suffolk County Civil Service examination is held for this title, the provisional employee must take the examination, pass it and be reachable for appointment from the resultant eligible list in order to be retained. **CANDIDATE MUST MEET ALL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS LISTED BELOW TO APPLY.DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASSUnder general direction, an employee in this class plans and supervises the efficient and economical operation of a school lunch program. Work consists of establishing and carrying out school policies and procedures for effective functioning of the lunch program. Supervision is exercised over a substantial number of Cooks and Food Service Workers in a number of school cafeterias. Work is evaluated through conferences and written reports and is subject to administrative direction and policy review by the Chief School Administrator. Work is also subject to periodic inspection by school health officials. Performs related work as required.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIESPlanning, directing, assessing and implementation of Child Nutrition program to meet nutritional needs of children; work with building administrators and medical staff, including Nurses, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, consulting and personal physicians to implement and plan meal modifications for studentsEstablish standards for preparation and presentation of mealsEnsure food is prepared and served in a sanitary, safe environment in accordance with Dept. of Health regulations; maintain updated knowledge of Dept. of Health requirements and regulationsDevelop and integrate safety procedures in all phases of operationEstablish financial objectives for the Child Nutrition program, use purchasing guidelines and bid standards for cost effectiveness; develop cost effective menus while meeting all local, state, and federal guidelinesEnsure food production is efficient and effective in production and distributionComplete required State Education reportingEnsure compliance with all local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and policies as they relate to Child Nutrition programAbility to operate Nutrikids POS program or similar programDevelop guidelines for emergency situations within the programInterviews and recommends the hiring of school lunch personnel; establish methods for training and evaluating work performanceEstablish standards for professional development and implements personnel policies and procedures as they relate to the Child Nutrition programDevelop, implement, maintain and manage School Wellness ProgramPerforms other duties consistent with this titleFULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICSThorough knowledge of food preparation and food service management methods and techniques; thorough knowledge of food values and nutrition; good knowledge of the operation of all standard kitchen equipment typical of large institutional kitchens; good knowledge of food costs; good knowledge of the sanitation standards acceptable for large cafeteria programs; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of school lunch personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to plan attractive menus and supervise the preparation of appetizing foods; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the school administration, civic groups and the general public; ability to prepare routine financial and business reports; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; physical conditions commensurate with the demands of the position.Minimum Qualifications:Either:(a) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor’s Degree in nutrition, nutrition education, food service management, dietetics, family and consumer sciences, culinary arts, business or a related field; or,(b) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor’s Degree and a NY State recognized certification as a Dietician/Nutritionist ;or(c) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor’s Degree and five (5) years of experience in the management of school nutrition programs.Candidates must attend ongoing continuing education/training as required by the Food and Nutrition Service of the United States Department of Agriculture.To apply, please upload your résumé and a job specific cover letter.
