The White Plains City School District has an opening for the Director of Alternative High School effective July 2024. Though this is a probationary tenure track 12-month administrative position, interim candidates will be considered. The Director of Alternative High School plans, directs and manages the instructional program, operations and personnel and ensures a safe, positive learning environment for the students and staff. Rochambeau is the alternative campus of White Plains High School and this position reports to the Principal of White Plains High School and Superintendent of Schools. The ideal candidate for Director of Alternative High School should:Hold valid NYS SDA or SDL certification.Have at least three (3) years of successful experience as a secondary administratorHave at least five (5) years of teaching experience at the secondary levelA strong vision of exemplary alternative education including scheduling, curriculum development, proactive positive climate and culture initiatives.Display a rich, substantive, research-based knowledge both of academic subject matter and social emotional needs of students.Demonstrated success in relationship building with both staff and students.Passion for the work and a willingness to embrace challenges along with a high level of flexibility and problem-solving energy.Demonstrated record of seeking growth, responding well to challenge, and accepting the need for change when there is valid evidence that a practice is not working.Demonstrate highly developed interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.Demonstrated success in improving student outcomesHave the ability to travel between school buildings and participate in out-of-district trainings as needed.Position duties include:Partner with White Plains High School Administration to ensure student fluidity and access to WPHS.Work collaboratively with Central Office Staff, Curriculum Coordinators, Instructional Coaches, Teachers, Teaching Assistants, and all staff to improve instructional practice and increase student outcomes.Establish, alternative, flexible ways in which students may gain credit; project-based learning and capstone projects and internship opportunities.Continue to run the GED program and credit recovery.Work collaboratively with stakeholders to create a vibrant learning environment in which students experience creative learning opportunities, aligned to standards in order to fulfill the NYS graduation requirements.Recruit highly qualified, diverse instructional personnel to fill open positions and recommend candidates as per district guidelines.Evaluate student growth and achievement. Recommend changes designed to improve instructional effectiveness.Perform classroom observations and provide feedback for instructional improvement. Conduct formal observations of teachers as per district policies and procedures.Work with Assistant Superintendents, WPHS Administration, Directors and Coordinators to refine the long-range plan and budget for Rochambeau, using efficiencies to create new opportunities.Perform other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Special Education and Pupil services or WPHS PrincipalSalary placement would be on the ASA salary schedule with full benefits.
