MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Possession of a high school or equivalency diploma and either:A) Two (2) years’ experience as a school attendance officer which included investigations of truancy; orB) Two (2) years’ experience working with the public, which must have included or been supplemented with experience conducting investigations; orC) Satisfactory completion of 45 credits at a recognized college or university* may substitute for each year of the required experience in A) above. SPECIAL NOTE: Must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in the State of New York.Bilingual preferred; the ability to understand, to make oneself understood to all Spanish speaking individuals, as well as able to read and write Spanish proficiently.GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Tracks student absenteeism and verifies residency; reports findings to school authorities; does related work as assigned by building administrator.DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Under the general supervision of the principal, the incumbent of this class is responsible for reviewing reports of student absenteeism and conducting follow up with students, parents, counselors, teachers and school administrators to correct attendance issues. Responsibility also involves investigating and verifying student residency. Addresses student behavior(s) in hallways, cafeterias, and other locations throughout the building(s). Must have flexibility in scheduling in order to attend night and weekend events, as needed, and have access to own transportation in order to conduct residency investigations, both within and out of the district. Supervision of other staff is not a function of this class.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES: Good knowledge of the community geography; knowledge of or ability to learn school district software for computerized student information system and absence data; good investigative skills; good interviewing and investigative skills; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, school personnel, and community service personnel; ability to analyze computer student information system and associated data; ability to prepare written reports; tact; courtesy; discretion; sound judgment; resourcefulness; ability to perform in a reasonable manner the essential functions of the position.
